As of 8 October 2026, the latest reporting on Charlton Athletic’s ownership describes a sale process and a chairman who says the owners want new investment. No buyer, agreed deal or completed takeover has been reported. The most recent coverage we can date is from 3 to 5 August 2026, and we have not located any later report that confirms a change of control.
What was reported in August 2026
Three reports and statements from early August 2026 make up the current picture. They describe different things, so it helps to read them in order.
| Date | Source | What it said |
|---|---|---|
| 21 July 2023 (background) | BBC Sport | SE7 Partners, a subsidiary of Global Football Partners (GFP), completed its takeover of the club from Thomas Sandgaard. The transaction also included Charlton Athletic Women. |
| 3 August 2026 | The Guardian (Matt Hughes) | GFP had engaged Oakwell Sports Advisory to find a buyer, described as the club’s fifth owner in six years. A sales deck had reportedly been sent to potential investors. Charlton declined to comment to the Guardian. |
| 4 August 2026 | Chairman Gavin Carter, as quoted by South London | “What I’ve said publicly several times before, is that this ownership group is seeking new investment to help us progress. This is similar to the route taken [by] clubs like Ipswich, Wrexham and Bolton, and is not new news for Charlton.” |
| 5 August 2026 | Charlton Athletic Supporters’ Trust (CAST) | CAST, a supporters’ body that is not the buyer, seller, club or adviser, said the owners had been open to additional investment for many months. It said Carter did not categorically rule out a complete sale, quoting his remark that “every asset has its price.” CAST also said season preparations were continuing according to plan. |
The Guardian’s description of the sale process is reported activity. Carter’s comments describe the owners’ stated position. Neither establishes that a buyer has been identified or that control has changed hands.
Sale or investment: why the difference matters
The words “sale,” “investment” and “takeover” are often used as if they mean the same thing. For a club’s supporters, customers and creditors they do not. Partial investment can leave the current owners in control, while a complete sale transfers control to a new owner. The table below sets out how the current reporting fits each scenario.

Who owns Charlton now
- Current owner: GFP, through its UK subsidiary SE7 Partners, which completed the 2023 takeover (BBC Sport).
- Group structure: The Guardian describes GFP as a group of five US investors led by Gabriel Brener.
- Price paid: The Guardian reported that the group paid around £15 million in 2023 and would seek several times that figure in any sale. This is a reported transaction amount, not a verified valuation.
- Ownership history: The Guardian’s “fifth owner in six years” framing is its own characterisation of the club’s recent ownership changes.
The Valley and the lease
Stadium tenure matters to any buyer, but it does not by itself show whether the ownership has changed. According to the Guardian, The Valley has a capacity of 27,000, Charlton does not own the ground, and the lease has been extended until 2040. CAST’s account of its meeting with Carter says he described the lease terms as sensible and the relationship with Roland Duchâtelet’s team as good.
The five-year revenue target
Carter told supporters they should not be concerned and described Charlton as a Championship and WSL club. He said the five-year plan requires the club to reach Championship average revenues by 2027–28, as reported by South London. This is the chairman’s plan, not an independently verified forecast, and it has not yet been achieved.

What to watch next
- An official club statement naming a buyer or confirming a signed agreement.
- Any announcement that GFP or SE7 Partners has ceased to hold control of the club.
- Reporting that names a specific investor, even if the stake is partial, since that would clarify whether control changes.
- Updates to the five-year plan, including progress toward the 2027–28 revenue target.
What the reporting does not cover
The coverage located does not address ticket prices, season-ticket terms or the club’s detailed finances. Anyone who pays for tickets, memberships or merchandise should check the club’s official channels for changes rather than relying on press reports of a possible sale.
Ownership discussions can change quickly, and reporting from early August 2026 may not reflect what has happened since. Treat the position described here as the latest reporting we could date as of 8 October 2026.
