Most ultrasound technicians need at least an associate degree or a postsecondary certificate in diagnostic medical sonography, and the training combines classroom instruction with supervised clinical work. A bachelor’s degree is an option too, but it is not the only standard path. The credential you need depends on the certifying body you plan to use and on whether the state where you work requires a license, so the program you choose should be checked against both before you enroll.
Ultrasound technician is the same job as diagnostic medical sonographer
In the United States, the role most people call an ultrasound tech is formally titled diagnostic medical sonographer. Sonographers operate ultrasound equipment, position patients, and review the images they produce for quality. The schooling below prepares you for that work, and the job titles you will see in listings and licensing rules are usually the formal one.
The three educational routes
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in its 2026 Occupational Outlook Handbook, identifies an associate degree as the typical entry-level education for sonographers and notes that a postsecondary certificate may also be sufficient. Bachelor’s degree programs are available as well. The table compares these routes using only what the national sources establish.

The length and price of any single program are school-specific. Compare them directly with the schools on your shortlist rather than relying on a national average.

What to prepare before you apply
BLS notes that high school students interested in this field may benefit from coursework in anatomy, physiology, physics, and math. These subjects build the vocabulary and quantitative skills used in sonography classes, and they are also the subjects most often reviewed when programs assess applicants.

Classroom coursework
Sonography programs typically cover anatomy, medical terminology, applied sciences such as the physics behind how ultrasound images are formed, and specialty instruction. Specialty tracks commonly include abdominal and breast sonography, among others. Choosing a program that offers the specialty you want matters if you plan to work in that area.

Clinical training
Programs include supervised clinical work in a hospital, a physician’s office, or an imaging laboratory, performed under an experienced sonographer. This hands-on training is a core part of the education rather than an add-on. When you compare schools, ask how clinical sites are arranged, how many sites are available, and whether placement is guaranteed or students must find their own. The national sources do not establish clinical-placement availability at any particular school, so get these answers from each program.
How to vet a sonography program
- Confirm programmatic accreditation. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) explains in its student guidance that programmatic, or specialized, accreditation assesses specific programs within an educational institution, such as a diagnostic medical sonography program. Look up the exact program in the accreditation directory rather than relying on the school’s general accreditation alone.
- Ask which credential the program leads to. Find out whether graduates qualify to sit for the examination you plan to take. CAAHEP advises students to weigh accreditation status alongside the certification or licensure requirements of their profession.
- Check the examination pathway rules with the certifying body. The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) lists an education prerequisite route for graduates of qualifying programmatically accredited sonography-related programs. Its prerequisite guidance specifies documentation requirements, and eligibility depends on the pathway you use. If you plan to use a route based on prior allied-health education or clinical experience, confirm the current rules with ARDMS before you apply.
- Ask about clinical sites and specialties. Confirm the clinical settings, the number of hours or sites offered by the school (the school must provide these figures), and whether the program offers the specialty you intend to practice.
- Compare the practical terms. Cost, length, admissions criteria, and placement availability are school-specific. Put them in a side-by-side comparison for each program on your list.
Certification versus state licensing
Licensing and certification are separate requirements, and they do not always apply to the same people in the same way. The BLS notes that some sonographers need a state-issued license, that employers may require or prefer professional certification, and that workers may also need basic life support or CPR certification. Because rules vary by state and by employer, check the licensing board where you plan to work and ask prospective employers which credential they expect.

How ARDMS examination eligibility works
ARDMS administers the examinations that award ultrasound credentials. Its requirements link your education and clinical experience to the prerequisite for a specific exam. Completing a course or buying an exam study guide does not, on its own, establish eligibility. Keep transcripts, clinical records, and any documentation that ARDMS asks for, because eligibility is confirmed from that paperwork.
What the national job figures show
- Median annual wage: $96,590 in May 2025, according to the BLS 2026 Occupational Outlook Handbook.
- Projected employment growth: 14 percent from 2025 to 2035, according to the same handbook.
- Projected openings: about 6,000 per year on average over 2025 to 2035, according to the same handbook.
These are national estimates for the occupation as a whole. They do not predict what an individual graduate will earn or how quickly one will find work. BLS attributes expected demand partly to an aging population and to growing use of sonography across medical specialties.

It does not replace an accredited program, supervised clinical training, or the eligibility rules for a credential.
Where the official guidance stops
The national sources explain the general U.S. pathway. They do not establish any state’s licensing rules, the accreditation status of an individual college, current admissions criteria, tuition, program length, or clinical-placement availability. Those details are published by your state licensing board, the credentialing organizations named above, and each school. Verify them there before you commit to a program.
