Depop is a peer-to-peer marketplace for buying, selling and discovering secondhand fashion, with social features such as profiles, likes, comments and follows. PerthNow reported in February 2021 that more than one million young Australians had joined; that is a dated claim, not a current Australian user count. Perth fashion blogger Kate Hannah and influencer Jackson Blythe told the outlet that Depop’s mix of shopping, social interaction and clothing resale helped explain its appeal.
What is Depop?
Depop is a marketplace where people list and buy pre-owned clothing and accessories. Its social features let people follow sellers, browse profiles, like and share listings, and interact in comments. That makes it more than a listings page: shoppers can discover items through people and style as well as search.
Depop currently describes itself as a peer-to-peer circular fashion marketplace for finding secondhand everyday, vintage and designer items, expressing personal style and extending clothing life. These are Depop’s stated aims and positioning, not proof that every user joins for the same reason. Depop About
What did “one million young Australians” mean?
In a story published on 19 February 2021, PerthNow reported that more than one million young Australians had joined Depop. The article also said that a quarter of Australians aged 15–29 had signed up. The passage does not explain the underlying study, how “joined” or the age-group denominator was defined, or how the figures were calculated. Treat them as claims reported by PerthNow at that time—not as independently verified counts or current proportions. PerthNow also noted that Depop opened its Australian headquarters in November 2019. Why did the Perth influencers say people were joining?
Shopping that feels social
Kate Hannah, a Perth fashion blogger, described the platform as combining marketplace shopping with social-media-style discovery. She said: “It combines the best features of both (eBay and Instagram) into the one platform which makes it really user friendly and really fun to use,”
Hannah also highlighted interaction between buyers and sellers: “It also has that element of conversation and back and forth in comments and likes between buyers and sellers, its like a natural evolution from the old school eBay.” Her comments point to a particular appeal: browsing and buying can happen alongside following people and reacting to their listings.

Personal style and a rotating wardrobe
Influencer Jackson Blythe described reselling clothes as part of his business model. Cycling outfits through his wardrobe gave followers fresh looks, he said. In that example, resale is not just a way to clear out clothes: it also supports a changing public style and keeps an audience engaged.
The possibility of resale income
Blythe also said that some sellers aimed to make a profit or relied on Depop as a main source of income. He framed this in the context of job losses during COVID-19, saying: “I think with COVID especially people are losing jobs, you have massive amounts of people looking for alternate ways to make money,”

These are interviewees’ perspectives, not a representative survey of Australian users or evidence that selling reliably produces income. A seller’s gross sales are not the same as profit; costs and fees matter.
How large is Depop now?
Later global figures should not be confused with PerthNow’s 2021 Australian claim. Etsy, Inc.’s 2025 annual report counted approximately 55.6 million Depop registered users—accounts—worldwide as of 31 December 2025. It separately reported 7.0 million active buyers and 3.2 million active sellers. The report said 87% of Depop buyers over the prior year were under 34, and global registered-user sign-ups grew 46% year over year in 2025. None of those figures is an Australian user count. Depop said in a 3 July 2026 newsroom announcement that it had approximately 56 million registered users. It also cited an average A$502 in first-year gross sales among Australian sellers who joined between January 2011 and July 2026 and completed at least one sale within their first 12 months. Depop says this internal analysis includes fees. It is a mean for sellers who made at least one sale, not a typical guaranteed result, not profit, and not a forecast for a new seller. Depop CEO Peter Semple said of the community: “The growth of Depop’s Australian community has been remarkable, and so much of that is down to the sellers and buyers who have helped build the platform into what it is today.” That is the company’s characterization of its growth, rather than an independent explanation of why particular Australians joined. Why Depop’s appeal matters to personal finances
For buyers, Depop offers another place to look for secondhand clothing; the final cost includes the listing price and any applicable buyer fees, taxes and shipping. For sellers, it can provide a way to resell clothes, but revenue depends on what sells and what it costs to make a sale. The influencer interviews illustrate possible motivations—style, interaction, wardrobe turnover and income—but do not establish typical outcomes.
