The Iran conflict reaches US energy costs mainly through global oil and refined-fuel markets. Disruption to Middle East exports and to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz tightens world supply and can push crude prices up, and diesel is the sharpest pressure point. This does not mean US oil has disappeared. The United States produces substantial oil and gas, but domestic consumers still pay prices tied to a global market. The figures below are a dated snapshot from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) October 6, 2026 outlook and related reporting through October 8, 2026. They are not a permanent price level.
How the conflict reaches the pump
A regional disruption reaches a gas station through a short chain of links. The sequence below is a simplified model, not a measured breakdown of any single price change.
- Shipments slow or reroute. The Strait of Hormuz is a major route for Middle East oil exports. A conflict or threat there can disrupt tanker movements, and EIA treats that route as a central constraint in its outlooks.
- Global crude tightens. Fewer barrels reaching world markets, combined with falling inventories, raises crude prices or makes them more volatile. Markets also add a risk premium for the chance that disruption lasts longer.
- Refiners compete for crude. EIA said extreme tightness in diesel markets was adding upward pressure on crude, because refiners needed crude to meet diesel demand.
- Wholesale costs reach retail. Pump prices reflect crude and refining costs, so the increase passes to drivers with a delay and with local margins that vary.
US production does not switch this chain off. EIA’s outlook forecasts US crude output alongside global prices, but it does not claim that domestic production insulates consumers from world benchmarks. A large producer can still pay prices linked to global benchmarks for the fuel it uses.
The Strait’s status has changed over time
Reports from different months describe different conditions, so each claim about the Strait needs its date. Read together, EIA’s outlooks show a sequence of changing conditions rather than one unbroken closure.

EIA Administrator Tristan Abbey said in the June 9, 2026 outlook: “Any scenario involving full restoration of inventories, production, and trade flows to pre-conflict levels must account for the partial restructuring of the global oil market that has already occurred.” The point argues against assuming a quick return to pre-conflict conditions.
Current prices and EIA forecasts
Observed prices and forecasts answer different questions, so the table separates them.

The Brent figures are model outputs. A $105 Q4 forecast is an assumption in EIA’s projection, not a price already realized across the whole quarter.
Why diesel is the sharpest pressure point
The gap between the September averages in the table is about $1.94 per gallon, far wider than the pressure on gasoline alone would suggest. Diesel powers much of US freight trucking, so a diesel squeeze can reach prices beyond a single car’s fuel tank, although the sources here do not quantify that spillover.

Inventory data points the same way. EIA reported US distillate inventories 13% below the five-year average for the week ending September 25, 2026. Distillate is the fuel group that includes diesel. The diesel readings in the table peaked on September 22 and were still elevated on October 2, which is consistent with a market that had not yet loosened. The G7 release plan discussed below frontloads diesel volumes.
Natural gas is on a different footing
EIA’s September outlook expected US natural-gas inventories to be above the five-year average at the end of the 2026 injection season. Its October outlook forecast a 2027 Henry Hub average of $3.16 per MMBtu. These figures do not describe a shortage comparable to the diesel market. The sources here do not establish how much the conflict affects natural-gas prices, so keep natural gas separate from gasoline and diesel when reading energy headlines.

Conflict, ceasefire and release developments
The political timeline and the November 3 midterms
On October 8, AP reported that Trump said the US would not resume military strikes against Iran before the November 3 midterm elections. The same report described continuing discussions and uncertainty about what follows. It also said the sides signed a short-lived interim agreement in June, intended to establish a 60-day ceasefire and a framework for a permanent deal. A statement about strikes does not show that the ceasefire is permanent or that energy flows have returned to normal.
The G7 release plan
In an announcement on October 2, reported by AP, G7 countries planned to release 100 million barrels of oil and fuel products, starting with substantial diesel volumes. A planned release is not a demonstrated price effect. Any change in pump or crude prices attributed to the plan would need data from after the announcement and from actual deliveries.

Administration claims about the Strait
A White House post on August 28 asserted that US forces controlled the strait and had moved nearly 1,500 commercial vessels carrying 750 million barrels under protection. These are the administration’s claims in a political statement. They document the official position, but the sources here do not independently verify them, so attribute them to the White House if you cite them.
What the EIA forecast includes and leaves out
- Input cutoff. EIA finalized its October forecast inputs on October 1, 2026. Events after that date fall outside the model.
- Included. The 40 million barrel US Strategic Petroleum Reserve exchange announced September 29.
- Excluded. The G7 release plan and later market events.
- Conditional. The price path rests on the flow assumption in the October row of the Strait table. If flows recover faster or slower, the path changes.
The sources here do not attribute the broader US cost-of-living increase to the conflict, and they do not give an economy-wide dollar cost. Fuel prices have several drivers, so a single-cause explanation overstates what the evidence shows.
What this means for a household budget
The numbers above describe national averages and forecasts, not what any particular driver pays. Build a range for fuel spending instead of planning around one forecast.
Turn a per-gallon change into dollars
As an illustration only, assume a household buys 12 gallons a week. Each $0.10 per gallon change then moves the weekly fuel bill by $1.20, or about $62 over 52 weeks. Replace the 12 gallons with your own usage, and remember that a diesel vehicle and a gasoline vehicle face different prices.
Use the table as a range
Use the September observed averages as your base case. If you drive a diesel vehicle, use the highest diesel reading in the table as a stress case. Treat EIA’s 2027 gasoline average as a possibility rather than a plan, since it sits $0.35 per gallon below its 2026 annual average forecast.
