What do GUC and VGUC stand for?
GUC commonly expands to “Good Used Condition.” A seller may use it for an item with signs of regular use and minor to moderate flaws. VGUC commonly means “Very Good Used Condition,” suggesting light wear or minor flaws associated with gentler use. These are common descriptions, not fixed condition thresholds.
For example, a secondary explainer describes GUC items as potentially having small damage or stains and VGUC items as potentially showing fading or wear without holes or stains. Those are examples of how sellers may use the terms, not guarantees about any particular listing.
Is VGUC better than GUC?
Generally, yes: VGUC signals a better overall condition and less wear than GUC. The distinction is subjective, though. One seller’s VGUC might have flaws another seller would describe as GUC, so the abbreviation alone cannot tell you exactly what you will receive.

Are GUC and VGUC official marketplace grades?
Do not assume so. Mercari’s U.S. help guidance describes its own condition categories for listings without defining GUC or VGUC. For clothing marked “Good,” Mercari says minor flaws can include slight pilling, stretching, minor fading, or loose threads, provided the item remains wearable and functional. Mercari’s condition-grade guidance is specific to its own categories.
A 2014 Poshmark blog post gives sellers advice about describing wear, with examples such as pilling, pulls, loose stitches, fading, and discoloration. It uses “Good Used Condition” and “Very Used Condition” as headings, so it should not be treated as a universal definition of VGUC or as evidence of a cross-marketplace grading standard. Poshmark’s older condition-description guidance is useful for its examples of flaws to disclose.

How to judge a listing before you buy
Treat GUC or VGUC as a quick clue, then assess the specific item. Mercari advises buyers to review the entire listing and ask the seller about condition concerns. Its guidance supports checking the listing rather than relying on a short label.
- Look for clear, close-up photos of areas likely to show wear, such as seams, cuffs, soles, or corners.
- Check whether the description names relevant issues, including stains, holes, pilling, fading, loose seams, or odors.
- Compare the type and severity of any flaws, not just the condition abbreviation.
- If an unclear or undisclosed flaw could change your decision, ask the seller about it before purchasing.
A seller-authored Poshmark listing definition describes GUC as allowing minor to moderate flaws from regular use and VGUC as allowing minor flaws from gentle use; it also says used items should have flaws detailed in the description. That is one seller’s framing, not an official Poshmark rule. The listing’s definitions illustrate why the seller’s own description matters.
