Pay in 4 is described as interest-free, while monthly plans may charge interest; Affirm says its APRs generally range from 0% to 36%. The offer at checkout—not the broad range—shows your rate, payment schedule, and total repayment. Affirm says it does not charge late fees, but missed payments can still affect credit history and future access to the service.
How Affirm works
Affirm is a financing service, not a product to buy. At participating merchants, shoppers may be offered installment plans at checkout. Affirm also describes using a virtual card number as a card payment method. Depending on the offer, repayment may be split into four payments or spread across monthly installments, typically over three, six, or 12 months or longer. Not every plan or merchant is available to every shopper.
Affirm’s annual report shows why it is important not to assume every offer is interest-free: for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2025, interest-bearing monthly installment loans represented 72% of the gross merchandise volume facilitated through its platform; Pay-in-X represented 14%; and 0% APR installment loans represented 13%. Those are platform-wide shares, not an estimate of what plan an individual shopper will receive. Affirm Holdings, Inc.’s fiscal 2025 annual report gives the company’s business model and figures.
What Affirm costs
Affirm describes its APR range as 0%–36%, subject to eligibility. The rate offered may depend on credit history, credit score, purchase price, merchant, and repayment history with Affirm. Monthly installment plans may carry interest; Pay in 4 is described as 0% APR. Affirm’s overview of how it works and its Help Center explanation set out these general terms.

#1 Best Overall
Affirm illustrates the difference with a $400 purchase: one example has an $80 down payment followed by 12 monthly payments of $28.88 at 15% APR; another has four interest-free payments of $100 every two weeks. This is an illustration, not a quote or promise of eligibility. Your checkout offer may have different terms.
Before accepting, compare the offer’s APR, total dollar repayment, payment dates and frequency, plan length, and any down payment. A 0% APR offer and an interest-bearing offer can have very different total costs even when they finance the same purchase. Use the specific disclosure shown for your transaction rather than inferring your terms from Affirm’s advertised range.

What happens if you miss a payment?
Affirm’s Help Center says it does not charge late fees, but that missing a payment can still affect your credit history and limit your ability to use Affirm for future purchases. Affirm’s late-fee guidance states this policy. No late fee does not mean a missed payment has no consequences.
Credit reporting and credit-score effects are related but not identical. The Associated Press reported on June 26, 2025, that Affirm began voluntarily reporting Pay-in-Four loans to Experian in April 2025. Whether a reported loan changes a score depends on the scoring model and whether a lender uses it; lenders do not universally use newer buy-now-pay-later score models. This does not establish that every Affirm product is reported or treated identically by every bureau or scoring system. The AP report provides the dated context.

Where Affirm is available—and a specific UK example
Availability and terms depend on country and merchant. In an announcement dated September 23, 2026, Affirm said it was introducing installment options for Amazon UK customers: 0% Pay-in-3 and a longer-term interest-bearing plan. These are UK-specific options, not evidence that the same plans are available through Amazon in other countries. Check the current checkout disclosure because merchant arrangements and lending terms can change. Affirm’s announcement describes the UK partnership.

An installment plan can make a purchase easier to budget for, but splitting a payment does not make the purchase cheaper. Consider the plan only after checking that its scheduled payments fit alongside your other bills and that you understand the total cost.

- Compare the full cost: Look at APR and total repayment, not just the size of each installment.
- Check the schedule: Confirm the due dates, payment frequency, term, and any down payment.
- Account for missed-payment risk: A lack of late fees does not remove potential credit-history consequences or limits on future Affirm use.
- Verify the actual offer: Terms and availability vary by shopper, merchant, and country, so use the current checkout disclosure.
