What Is an Insurance Declaration Page? A Guide to Your Policy Summary

An insurance declarations page summarizes who and what a policy insures, its dates, coverages, limits, and other key details. Here’s how to read it—and what it can’t tell you by itself.

An insurance declarations page—often called a “dec page”—is the policy-specific summary near the beginning of an insurance policy. It identifies who and what is insured, the policy dates, and selected coverages, limits, deductibles, and premium. It is a useful place to check what the insurer issued, but it does not replace the policy’s full terms.

What an insurance declaration page tells you

The declarations page gathers key details about one insurance policy. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) describes it simply: “A declarations page gives you details about your insurance coverage.” The information and layout vary by insurer and policy type.

Use the page to confirm the people, property or vehicles insured; the policy period; and the coverages and limits shown. It may also list deductibles, premium, discounts, a mortgage holder or lienholder, and endorsements—additions or changes to standard policy terms.

What to look for by policy type

Homeowners and renters insurance

A homeowners or renters declarations or information page may show the policy number, effective dates, insured-property address, mortgage holder, coverages, limits, premium, and discounts. A homeowners policy and renters policy do not insure the same things: renters insurance generally covers the renter’s belongings and personal liability rather than the building itself. The NAIC’s consumer overview, published July 1, 2012, describes these common details; individual insurer forms can differ. NAIC: Homeowners and Renters Insurance

Auto insurance

An auto dec page commonly identifies the policy term, insured, covered vehicles, and coverage limits. A sample NAIC page includes each vehicle’s year, make, model, and VIN, along with the policy period, coverage, limits, and lienholder. A lender may be listed as a loss payee when a vehicle has an outstanding loan. See the NAIC Consumer Auto Insurance resource and its sample auto declarations page.

How to review your dec page

  1. Check who and what is insured. Match the named insured and the property address or vehicle details to what you intended to insure. For a vehicle, compare the VIN as well as its description.
  2. Confirm the policy dates. Check the effective and expiration dates so you know when the listed policy period begins and ends.
  3. Review coverages, limits, and deductibles. Confirm the coverage types and amounts against what you requested. Note the deductible for each relevant coverage; the way a deductible applies can depend on the policy.
  4. Review the premium and listed changes. Note the premium and any discounts or endorsements shown. If a mortgagee, lienholder, or loss payee should be listed, check that information too.
  5. Resolve discrepancies with the insurer or agent. Ask about anything missing, incorrect, or unclear. NAIC advises consumers to read the page after receiving a policy to make sure it has the coverage they wanted to buy. Its consumer auto tool says: “Once you receive your insurance policy, the first thing you should read is the declarations page so you can make sure you have the coverage you wanted to buy.”

What the page does not establish

A declarations page is a summary, not the whole insurance contract. The policy’s insuring agreement, definitions, conditions, exclusions, and endorsements explain how coverage applies and may limit or change it. A coverage label or limit on the dec page alone does not establish that a particular loss is covered.

If the page lists an endorsement, read the actual endorsement and relevant policy forms to understand its effect. For a claim or a question about a specific situation, review the full policy and ask the insurer or agent for a policy-specific explanation. NAIC also advises asking an agent or insurance company how a deductible applies when that is unclear. NAIC guidance on homeowners and renters insurance

How to compare two declarations pages

Compare policies on the same details rather than choosing by premium alone. A lower premium does not show that two policies provide equivalent coverage.

  • Insured people and property or vehicles
  • Policy start and end dates
  • Coverage types and limits
  • Deductibles
  • Premium and payment details, if shown
  • Endorsements or additional coverage
  • Mortgagee, lienholder, or loss payee details, when relevant

When a difference matters, check the full policy forms and ask the insurer or agent how it affects coverage. The NAIC’s home insurance shopping tool is one example of how to compare policy features, but the governing terms are in the policy itself.

Is a declarations page proof of insurance?

It can provide useful details about a policy, but it is not universal proof for every purpose. A lender, government agency, or other organization may specify what documentation it accepts. Follow the requesting organization’s instructions and confirm requirements with it or your insurer. State-specific requirements can differ; the Texas Department of Insurance and Iowa Insurance Division provide state consumer guidance.
