On a paper check, it is the number at the bottom left, before the account number.
What an ABA number identifies
“ABA number” usually means an ABA routing number, also called a routing transit number. It identifies the financial institution responsible for, entitled to receive, or giving credit for a check or electronic transaction; it does not identify your individual account. The American Bankers Association describes this purpose in its Routing Number Policy & Procedures.
The ABA routing number was devised in 1910 and adopted by the banking industry in 1911, according to the ABA policy. The ABA’s history of the association likewise dates its introduction to 1911.
How to tell a routing number from an account number
A routing number identifies the financial institution; an account number identifies a customer’s account at that institution. Both may be needed to direct a payment to the right place, but they serve different purposes. Do not use the routing number in place of your account number.

Where to find your ABA number
On a paper check

In your bank account information
Check a bank statement or sign in to your bank’s mobile app or online account. You can also contact the bank and ask which routing number to use for the particular payment you are making.

What the nine digits mean
The number has three parts: a four-digit Federal Reserve routing symbol, a four-digit ABA institution identifier, and a one-digit check digit. Together, they form the nine-digit identifier used to route eligible transactions.

When you need it
Routing numbers are used to process checks and electronic payments, including ACH transactions and wire transfers. Banks can provide different instructions depending on the transaction, so do not assume that a routing number found on a check or in a general list is the one to use for every transfer. For example, the ABA’s direct-deposit guidance for tax refunds advises customers to use the routing and account details supplied by their financial institution.
