What Is a Steam Purchase on My Bank Statement? How to Identify Valve Charges

A Valve Software, Steampowered.com, or Steam Games charge is Steam billing for games, DLC, or in-game items. Here is how to match it to your purchase history and what to do if it does not match.

A charge on your bank or card statement that reads Valve Software, Steampowered.com, or Steam Games is Steam’s billing for computer games, downloadable content (DLC), or in-game items and currency, according to Steam Support’s “Unrecognized Charges” guidance. Whether that charge is yours comes down to one check: does it match a completed purchase in your Steam account history? If it does, the charge is explained. If it does not, you have a short, defined path to follow, and it does not start with assuming fraud.

What the statement descriptor means

Steam’s guidance names three descriptors you may see on a statement:

  • Valve Software
  • Steampowered.com
  • Steam Games

Steam says charges from the company cover games, DLC, and in-game items or currency. The sources reviewed do not establish one exact descriptor that every bank or payment method uses, so the text on your statement may be worded differently or truncated. Treat the three names as the most common examples to look for, not a complete list.

  1. Write down the exact descriptor, the transaction date, and the exact amount from the statement.
  2. Open Steam through the Steam Help Site or the Steam Client, sign in to the account name, and go to Account Details > View purchase history.
  3. Look for a purchase on the same date and at the same amount. Keep in mind that the statement date can differ from the purchase date by a day or more, depending on how your bank posts transactions.
  4. Ask anyone else who has access to the card or payment method whether they made the purchase. A family member or a shared device is a common source of charges that look unfamiliar.

If you find a matching purchase, the charge is accounted for. If the total on your statement is higher than the Steam price, move to the next section before assuming a mismatch.

When the amount on your statement is higher than the Steam price

Some banks add their own charges to an international or foreign-currency transaction. These can include processing fees, taxes, or currency-conversion charges. Steam says these fees are set by the payment provider and that it does not control them. A total that is higher than the price shown in your Steam purchase history is therefore not, by itself, evidence of a second purchase.

If the difference still cannot be explained after you account for these charges, contact your bank or card issuer and ask for the transaction details, including any fees or conversion rate that were applied.

Pending charges after a failed purchase

A failed Steam purchase can still appear as a pending entry. Your bank may place a temporary hold on the funds while it decides whether to release them. Steam’s purchasing FAQ says it will not collect funds held after an AVS or CVV check fails. It also says release depends on the bank’s processes and may take up to 30 days in the scenario it describes. That timing applies to that specific failed-check situation and is not a general banking rule.

A pending entry is not proof that Steam completed or collected a purchase. If you see one after a failed attempt, ask your bank about the hold and when it will be released. Your payment provider is the authoritative source for the status and timing of that hold.

Four statuses to tell apart

Most Steam-related entries fall into one of four situations. The table shows what to check for each.

Subscriptions and recurring fees

Steam’s guidance states: “Valve has no recurring fees or monthly charges unless otherwise explicitly stated as part of an online game subscription.” If you see a recurring charge from Steam or Valve and you have not signed up for a game subscription, that is a reason to check your subscriptions in the Steam account and then contact Steam Support.

If nobody recognizes the charge

Use Steam Support’s “I have charges from Steam that I didn’t make” route. Have these details ready:

  • The payment type you used
  • The last four digits of the card
  • The email address on the Steam account
  • A phone number, if the form or support staff ask for one
  • If the descriptor is PayPal, the associated invoice ID

Do not send your full card number, expiration date, or CVV. Steam Support states: “Steam Support will never request your full credit card number, expiration date, or CVV code.” Anyone who asks for those details while claiming to be Steam is not following Steam’s own guidance.

While Steam Support reviews the charge, contact your payment provider as well. The provider can cancel, dispute, or investigate the transaction on its side, and it holds the authoritative record of what was charged.

Limits of this guidance

The Steam Support pages we reviewed on 8 October 2026 do not show a publication or revision date, so check the page itself when you read it. The descriptors and failure scenarios described here are examples from Steam’s published guidance and may not cover every case. For any specific transaction, the three sources that can settle it are your Steam purchase history, Steam Support, and your bank or card issuer.
