A trifecta bet asks you to pick the first three finishers in one horse race in their exact official order. A straight ticket covers one order; a box covers several orders for a higher total stake.
How a straight trifecta works
On a straight trifecta ticket, each selected horse must finish in the position you assigned it. For example, a ticket reading 2-4-11 wins only if horse 2 finishes first, horse 4 second and horse 11 third. If the same three horses finish in a different order, that ticket does not win. Gulfstream Park’s 2025 guide illustrates this exact-order requirement.
A trifecta is a separate pool from win and exacta wagers under Ohio’s pari-mutuel rules. The wager concerns one designated race, not the results across several races.
What a trifecta box covers—and costs
A box uses the selected horses in every possible order for the required finishing positions. Boxing horses 2, 4 and 11 covers these six combinations:

Three horses can be arranged in 3 × 2 × 1, or six, orders. So at a one-unit base stake the box costs six units, compared with one unit for a single straight combination. The amount in dollars depends on the track’s base stake; $1 is not a universal minimum. Gulfstream Park’s guide likewise shows six combinations for a three-horse box.
Adding horses to a box increases the number of combinations quickly. More combinations mean a larger stake at the same base amount; they do not establish that a bet is profitable.
How trifecta keys work
A key keeps one horse in a chosen finishing position while allowing selected horses to fill the other positions across multiple combinations. For example, a ticket may key one horse to finish first and combine it with other selections for second and third. The precise combinations and cost depend on the selections and base stake. Ticket interfaces differ, so check the displayed combinations and total stake before submitting. Federal Register material on advance-deposit wagering describes keyed tickets as a way to cover combinations while fixing a horse’s position.
How the pool and payout work
A trifecta is pari-mutuel: wagers go into a pool, and the payout is calculated from the distributable pool after applicable deductions, rather than from a fixed odds quote. Winning bettors share that pool under the governing rules. As more wagers enter, the pool and potential payout can change; a winning ticket does not guarantee a particular return. Takeout is the amount removed from wagers before the payoff is determined, but the applicable amount depends on the jurisdiction and wager. Gulfstream Park’s guide explains takeout in those terms; it does not establish one universal percentage.

How it differs from other finish-order bets
The main distinction is how many finishers you must select and whether their order matters. The Illinois Racing Board describes these wager types:
| Wager | What must be predicted | Does order matter? |
|---|---|---|
| Exacta | First two finishers | Yes |
| Quinella | First two finishers | No |
| Trifecta | First three finishers | Yes |
| Superfecta | First four finishers | Yes |
Check local rules before placing a ticket
Ticket minimums and the treatment of scratches, dead heats, coupled entries and other contingencies can vary. In Ohio, rules specify how trifecta tickets are handled in cases such as scratches, dead heats and certain no-winning-ticket outcomes; those provisions should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. For out-of-state simulcast races, the Illinois Racing Board notes that rules follow the state where the race originates, and takeout may differ. Consult the race program and the rules for the track and jurisdiction governing that race before wagering.
