There is no single outcome for every shipment: the reason for the failed attempt, signature requirements, and shipper restrictions all matter. In the U.S., start with the tracking page and any door tag, then choose only the options shown for your package.
What a “We tried to deliver” scan means
FedEx uses “We tried to deliver” when an attempted delivery could not be completed. Its examples include a recipient who was unavailable and a shipment that required a signature. The scan does not, by itself, tell you whether FedEx will try again or hold the package; check the shipment’s current tracking details and door-tag instructions.
The steps below describe U.S. procedures. Rules and available services vary by country and shipment. FedEx’s Canada page also notes that an attempt photo may be available only for some shipments and in supported locations: FedEx Canada delivery-attempt FAQ.
What to do after a missed FedEx delivery
- Check tracking and the door tag. Review the attempt date, current package location, instructions, and whether the tag’s “Final delivery attempt” box is checked. FedEx says a checked box means the parcel is at a FedEx location. Tracking may show package-specific choices and, where available, an attempt photo. See FedEx’s U.S. delivery-attempt guidance.
- Use an option offered for this shipment. If eligible, you may be able to request redelivery or Hold at Location through tracking or FedEx Delivery Manager. A shipper can restrict recipient changes, and a hold request may change the delivery date. FedEx displays the options available for the individual shipment; see its Delivery Manager information and hold-location instructions.
- Confirm a pickup is ready before traveling. Check the exact location and its instructions in tracking or the notice. FedEx may notify you by text, automated call, email, or door tag. Bring the tracking number or door tag and government-issued photo ID. If the address on your ID differs from the package label, bring an accepted document that shows the matching address, such as a utility bill or insurance card.
- Check the signature service. If the shipment requires a signature, the service level can limit what you can change. See the requirements below before requesting release or arranging pickup.
- Contact FedEx if the tracking and notice conflict. If the package appears held at an unexpected location, or you cannot tell what to do next, use the official hold-location guidance or call 1.800.GoFedEx (1.800.463.3339). For a package sent to a FedEx OnSite location after a failed attempt, FedEx says to call support to request another attempt or a different authorized hold location. Redelivery or pickup: how to choose
If tracking offers more than one path, compare the practical trade-offs rather than assuming a request will be available or faster.

- How soon you need the package: check the date shown for each option. A hold request may change the delivery date.
- Where the package is going: determine whether it can be redelivered or must be collected at the location already assigned.
- Pickup logistics: consider the hold location’s distance and opening hours, and follow the notice’s instructions before leaving.
- Signature and ID: verify who must sign and what identification is needed.
- Shipper restrictions: if an option is missing, the shipment may be ineligible or the shipper may have restricted changes.
Signature requirements can limit your options
Direct Signature Required
Someone at the delivery address must sign. If no one is available, FedEx may make another attempt or hold the package nearby. The shipper selects the signature service, and some release or delivery-change options may not be available.
Adult Signature Required
A person age 21 or older with valid ID must sign. FedEx does not accept an electronic signature for this service. Check the shipment’s tracking instructions for the available next step; do not assume another person or a release request can satisfy the requirement.

How long FedEx holds a missed package
FedEx’s Delivery Manager FAQ gives different periods for different hold situations: a package at the location identified on a door tag is held for five business days, while a secure FedEx location holds a package for up to seven days. These are not one universal deadline. Check the last pickup date in your specific tracking notice before making plans; after the door-tag-location period, the package may be returned to the shipper. Why the outcome varies by shipment and region
The shipper chooses the signature requirement and may limit recipient changes. The parcel’s eligibility and delivery status also affect the options FedEx presents. A hold request can alter the delivery date, so rely on the dates shown for your package rather than assuming that a change will preserve the original schedule.
Country-specific procedures are not interchangeable. For example, FedEx Australia says an unattended business shipment is reattempted the following business day and, if the business remains unattended after three attempts, returned to the station for further instructions.
