KLM ended scheduled passenger service with its Boeing 747s in March 2020, about a year earlier than planned, as the COVID-19 crisis forced the airline to cut flights. Some Combi 747s briefly returned for cargo missions, while full-freighter 747s continued in Air France-KLM’s cargo operation. Those are different aircraft and operations: KLM’s passenger 747 era ended, but the group’s cargo 747s did not all disappear at the same time.
When did KLM retire its passenger 747s?
KLM’s last scheduled passenger 747 flight was KL686 from Mexico City to Amsterdam. It landed at Schiphol on 29 March 2020. The landing marked the end of the Boeing 747 as a passenger aircraft for KLM, as NRC reported on 28 March 2020.
KLM had expected to retire its final 747s in 2021. The pandemic accelerated that schedule: passenger demand collapsed and the airline sharply reduced flying. No public farewell event was held amid pandemic restrictions.
What happened to the Combi aircraft and cargo 747s?
Combi aircraft briefly flew cargo missions
A Combi 747 carried passengers in one section and freight on a cargo deck. After scheduled passenger service ended, three KLM Combis returned to service temporarily in April 2020 to carry cargo, including medical goods from China. These missions were not a return to scheduled passenger flights. The aircraft were withdrawn later in 2020. Air France-KLM’s 2020 Universal Registration Document, published in 2021, records that KLM retired four 747-400s and two 747-400 Combi aircraft during 2020.

Martinair full freighters remained in the cargo operation
Full-freighter 747s are configured to carry freight rather than passengers. They were operated by Martinair, a KLM subsidiary whose cargo operation became part of Air France-KLM Martinair Cargo—not by KLM’s scheduled passenger service. In its 2020 registration document, Air France-KLM recorded four fully owned Martinair freighters. NRC also reported four Martinair Cargo full freighters in late 2020, three in KLM Cargo livery. Those are figures reported at the time, not a current fleet count.
Why did KLM bring forward the retirement?
The immediate reason was the COVID-19 crisis and the sharp contraction in passenger flying. The 747’s four engines and comparatively high fuel and maintenance costs also made it expensive to keep while KLM was shrinking its operation. KLM shifted intercontinental passenger flying to newer Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft. The documented explanation is a combination of the crisis and fleet economics, not a single cause.

What is the plan for the remaining cargo 747s?
KLM’s 2025 Annual Report, published in 2026, says Air France-KLM Martinair Cargo plans to replace its 747 full freighters with Airbus A350Fs, with preparations for introduction underway for 2027. That is a forward plan, not confirmation that all 747 freighters have already left service. KLM’s report describes the A350F as 40% more fuel-efficient than the Boeing 747; that figure is the company’s comparison.

The available records do not establish the final fate of every retired passenger airframe. KLM’s 2020 annual report says two 747-400 aircraft were out of service and to be sold, but that status does not identify a buyer or confirm whether either was later stored, scrapped, converted, or preserved. A complete aircraft-by-aircraft account would require registration-level evidence.

One earlier museum example should not be confused with the 2020 retirement group: former KLM 747 Louis Blériot was transported to the Aviodrome museum at Lelystad in 2004. KLM’s first 747, named Mississippi, arrived at Schiphol on 31 January 1971 and made its first KLM flight to New York on 15 February. NRC reported that Boeing had supplied KLM with 45 aircraft across six 747 family types since 1971.
