What Happened to Cameroon Airlines? The 2008 Closure and Camair-Co’s Launch

Cameroon Airlines (CAMAIR), Cameroon’s former national carrier, stopped operating in May 2008. The government moved to liquidate it and prepare a successor, Cameroon Airlines Corporation, or Camair-Co. Camair-Co had been created in 2006 but did not begin commercial flights until March 28, 2011. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) documented a financial-leasing dispute and a government buyback of CAMAIR’s remaining aircraft during the transition; those facts do not, by themselves, establish a single cause for the airline’s failure.

When did Cameroon Airlines stop flying?

The IMF reported that CAMAIR ceased operations in May 2008. In its 2009 account, the IMF said liquidation was expected to be completed by April 2009. That was the timetable anticipated at the time, not confirmation that liquidation was completed on that date. IMF report

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) lists Cameroon Airlines as formed in 1971 and ceased in 2008. Its 2017 listing records the government’s stake in the former airline as 96.43 percent; that is a historical ownership figure, not a measure of its financial or operating performance. Why did Cameroon Airlines close?

The available institutional accounts do not establish one exhaustive cause. The IMF described CAMAIR’s cessation as part of a government liquidation and air-transport reform process. It also reported a dispute arising from financial-leasing contracts and said the government bought back the airline’s only remaining aircraft as part of resolving the dispute and establishing the successor. These details illuminate the transition but do not prove that the leasing dispute alone caused the closure. IMF report

The government’s stated reform aims included promoting effective and reliable air transport, improving public service, and reducing the sector’s burden on public finances. The shutdown disrupted domestic north–south air traffic, and authorities accelerated preparations for the new carrier. IMF report

Was Camair-Co the same airline under a new name?

No. Camair-Co was established as a separate public corporation before CAMAIR stopped operating. The company says presidential decree 2006/293 created it on September 11, 2006, and that it began commercial operations on March 28, 2011. Its stated missions include domestic passenger, cargo, and mail transport. Camair-Co company history

What is known about Camair-Co’s later difficulties?

Camair-Co’s existence as the successor did not mean its long-term problems were resolved. Cameroon’s Court of Auditors reviewed the company’s management for fiscal years 2018–2023 and summarized it as being in a structural crisis despite presidential instructions in 2020. Court of Auditors review
