American Airlines’ first Boeing 747 passenger aircraft left service by 1984–85, but the airline’s 747 story continued. It later operated two smaller 747SPs on its Dallas/Fort Worth–Tokyo Narita route, with the last American passenger flights taking place in July 1992. Between those eras, six original 747s became freighters and another went to NASA to carry Space Shuttle orbiters.
When did American Airlines first fly the 747?
American ordered the Boeing 747 in November 1966 and began using the aircraft in March 1970. While waiting for its own planes, it initially leased 747s from Pan Am. American’s 747-123s, marketed as “Astroliners,” served high-volume routes, including flights between New York or Boston and Los Angeles or San Francisco, as well as routes linking Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth and Hawaii. The specialist fleet history describes the early passenger operation.
What happened to the original 747-100s?
The 1973 oil crisis prompted American to withdraw eight 747s from passenger service. Six were converted into 747-123SF freighters and entered cargo service in late 1974. The available fleet account does not establish the subsequent owner or final disposition of each of those six aircraft, so their later histories should not be conflated with the documented fates of the passenger aircraft.
American retired its passenger 747-100s by 1984–85, replacing them with DC-10s that the fleet history describes as better suited to the routes. That was the end of the original 747-100 passenger era, not the final end of American’s use of the 747.

One aircraft became a NASA shuttle carrier
American sold 747-100 N9668 to NASA in 1974. It became N905NA, one of the aircraft used to ferry Space Shuttle orbiters across the United States. The specialist history says N905NA is preserved at Space Center Houston.
Why did American bring the 747 back?
In 1986, American bought two 747SPs from TWA for its long Dallas/Fort Worth–Tokyo Narita route. The 747SP was a shorter, lower-capacity version of the 747; its range and smaller cabin suited the route’s premium demand, according to the fleet history. This was a separate, two-aircraft operation—not a continuation of the original 747-100 fleet.

When did American’s 747 service end?
American’s final passenger 747 flights were in July 1992, when the MD-11 took over the Tokyo route. Airframe records distinguish the last service dates of the two SPs:
| Aircraft | Last American passenger or service flight | What followed |
|---|---|---|
| N601AA | Last American service flight: July 18, 1992 | Went into storage; later became Kazakhstan Airlines aircraft UN-001. Airframe history |
| N602AA | Final scheduled American passenger flight: July 20, 1992 | Ferried for storage; later became Dubai Royal Flight aircraft A6-SMM. Airframe history |
The dates refer to different milestones: N601AA’s last recorded American service flight and N602AA’s final scheduled passenger flight. Both records place the end of American’s passenger 747 operation in July 1992.
