Air Sahara was acquired by Jet Airways in April 2007 and renamed JetLite. It did not continue as an independently controlled airline under the Air Sahara brand until 2019: Jet Airways suspended its own operations on April 18, 2019, ending operations for its JetLite subsidiary as well.

How Air Sahara became JetLite

On April 20, 2007, Jet Airways took ownership and management control of Air Sahara and its domestic and international operations, according to Sahara India Pariwar’s statement. Jet Airways’ annual report identifies the acquired company as Sahara Airlines Limited, later known as Jet Lite (India) Limited.

Two days later, Sahara India Pariwar said Jet Airways had changed Air Sahara’s name to JetLite and would operate it as a Jet Airways subsidiary. Sahara said it had no remaining stake or management control. Air Sahara therefore had a successor brand and owner; it was not simply an airline that vanished without a transition.

What Jet Airways paid for the airline

Contemporary reporting on the revised agreement described a lump-sum consideration of ₹1,450 crore. The reported payment structure was staged: ₹500 crore had already been paid, ₹400 crore was due by April 20, 2007, and the balance was to be paid in four interest-free annual instalments. This was the agreed consideration, not a single ₹1,450 crore cash payment made on the closing date. The Economic Times reported the revised deal terms; Jet Airways’ later annual report records the consideration as INR 145,000 lakh, the same amount expressed in lakh rupees.

When did Air Sahara stop flying?

Air Sahara ceased to operate as an independently controlled airline under that name when Jet Airways took control in April 2007 and renamed it JetLite. JetLite later operated as a Jet Airways subsidiary. Jet Airways’ FY2019–20 annual report says the company suspended operations effective April 18, 2019, because of a critical liquidity position. That suspension brought Jet Airways’ and JetLite’s operations to an end; it was not the closure of a separate Air Sahara still operating independently. The report also records that insolvency proceedings began following an NCLT order on June 20, 2019. Jet Airways’ annual reports document the acquisition and later suspension.
