WestJet’s agreement with Boeing, announced September 3, 2025, covers 67 firm aircraft: 60 Boeing 737-10 MAX narrowbodies and seven 787-9 Dreamliner widebodies. Options for 29 more aircraft bring the maximum to 96. Options are not deliveries, and the figures are from a 2025 announcement, so they describe the terms WestJet and Boeing announced rather than a confirmed fleet as of October 2026.
What WestJet actually ordered
The headline number combines firm orders and unexercised options. Separating them shows how much of the deal was committed at announcement.
| Aircraft | Firm aircraft | Options | Total if every option is exercised |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boeing 737-10 MAX (narrowbody) | 60 | 25 | 85 |
| Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner (widebody) | 7 | 4 | 11 |
| Total | 67 | 29 | 96 |
Only the 67 firm aircraft were presented as a commitment. The 96 figure is the ceiling, and WestJet has not said that every option will be taken up. Figures are WestJet’s published quantities from September 2025, with the totals calculated from them.
Firm orders, options and the order book

- Firm aircraft: 67 in this order, which both WestJet and Boeing confirmed.
- Options: 29 in this order. An option gives the airline the right to order additional aircraft on agreed terms; it is not a delivery.
- Order book: WestJet described its order book as 123 aircraft and 40 options. Boeing called 123 the firm order book. The sources do not break down the 123 by aircraft type or by the date each order was placed, so the 123 should not be read as this deal alone.
When you see “123 aircraft” in a headline, check whether the sentence says firm, options, or both, because the two sources used different framing.
Why WestJet says it ordered the jets
WestJet said the aircraft support growth and renewal of its fleet, improve fuel efficiency, and let the airline serve more destinations with affordable fares. These are the company’s stated goals. The announcement does not include independently measured results, and no fuel-savings figure is attached to the claim.

WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech tied the order to two points: the largest order book of any Canadian airline, and a doubling of its Dreamliner fleet. With seven 787-9s already in service at announcement, seven more firm aircraft would bring that number to 14.
Boeing framed the deal differently. It described the 737 MAX order as supporting WestJet’s fleet commonality and passenger growth, and the 787 order as expanding the airline’s international network. Boeing said WestJet’s existing 787-9s link Canada with destinations in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Boeing also attributed a claim of $4 billion in annual economic benefit to Canada from its Canadian supply base. That figure is Boeing’s own estimate as reported in WestJet’s release, not an independent study.

The fleet at the time of the announcement
WestJet’s September 2025 release reported 193 passenger aircraft. This is a snapshot from that date, not a current count.
| Aircraft type | Count reported in September 2025 |
|---|---|
| Boeing 737 | 147 |
| Boeing 787 | 7 |
| De Havilland Q400 | 39 |
| Total | 193 |
WestJet put the average fleet age at approximately 10 years. Boeing described the fleet as nearly 150 737s and seven 787-9s, which matches the WestJet figures within rounding.

Delivery timing
WestJet said deliveries would run through 2034, which is the horizon for its fleet-growth plan. The announcements summarized here do not give a year-by-year delivery schedule, so the pace of arrivals and any split between the 737 and 787 programs is not established in the public coverage.
What this means for travelers and households
An aircraft order does not change fares, schedules or baggage rules on its own. Any effect on prices would depend on how many aircraft are delivered, where they are deployed, and what competitors do, and none of those outcomes is documented yet.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Airfare: WestJet’s stated goal is affordable options. That is an aim, not a price commitment.
- Routes: The Dreamliner expansion is tied to international service. Check WestJet’s schedule for any route you care about rather than assuming new service.
- Aircraft ownership and financing: The announcement does not disclose a purchase price or financing terms, so the cost to the airline cannot be estimated from it.
- Investing: A large order signals the airline’s plans, but it is a long-term commitment with options that may never be exercised. It does not by itself indicate profitability.
How to check whether the numbers have changed
Because this is a 2025 announcement, verify current figures before quoting them:
- Look for WestJet’s newsroom and its later investor or financial disclosures for updated order-book and fleet counts.
- Check Boeing’s newsroom for any amendments to the WestJet order, including exercised options.
- Confirm whether a source describes 123 aircraft as firm, as an order book including options, or as something else.
If an option has been exercised or a delivery has occurred since September 2025, the newer company announcement takes precedence over the figures in this article.
