Owning your masters means owning or controlling rights to specific sound recordings—not necessarily owning the songs themselves. A song’s composition (its music and lyrics) and its master recording (a particular recorded performance) are separate copyrighted works, and they can have different owners. The contract and applicable country’s law determine who owns or controls each one.
What is a master recording?
A master is a particular sound recording of a performance. It is distinct from the underlying musical composition: the song’s music and lyrics. As the U.S. Copyright Office explains, “When you record a song, you may be creating two works that are protected by copyright: a musical work and a sound recording.” U.S. Copyright Office: What Musicians Should Know about Copyright
That distinction matters because the two copyrights may be owned by different people or companies. An artist might own a recording while someone else owns or administers the composition rights, or the same party might control both.
What rights can master ownership provide?
In the United States, copyright in a sound recording includes exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute it and to authorize certain uses. The public-performance right for sound recordings is limited to digital audio transmissions. The scope of a particular owner’s control can also depend on licenses, assignments, and other agreements. See the U.S. Copyright Act, Chapter 1.

Owning a master is therefore meaningful, but it does not mean unlimited control over every use of the song. For example, placing an existing recording in a film or television project may require permission for both the recording and the composition: a master-use license from the sound-recording rights holder and a synchronization license from the composition rights holder. Does owning your masters mean you own the song?
No. Master ownership covers the particular recording; it does not automatically convey copyright in the underlying composition. A new recording of the same song is a different sound recording, while the composition remains a separate work. The rights needed for a particular use depend on what is being used and the relevant agreements.

Who owns a master recording?
There is no universal rule that a label always owns a master or that an artist always retains it. The signed agreement may transfer ownership, grant an exclusive license, or permit particular uses without transferring ownership. The U.S. Copyright Office’s recordation guidance treats transfers as including assignments and exclusive licenses. U.S. Copyright Office: Recordation Overview
Rules also vary by jurisdiction. In the UK, GOV.UK says the creator is generally the first owner of copyright in commissioned work unless the parties agree otherwise in writing; an implied license to use commissioned work does not necessarily transfer ownership. That is a UK-specific example, not a rule for every country. GOV.UK: Ownership of Copyright Works

How to check whether you own a recording
For a specific track, review the signed agreements and identify the rights for that recording rather than relying on informal descriptions such as “my album” or “my masters.” Check:
- The asset: Does the agreement cover the sound recording, the composition, or both?
- The rights granted: Is there an assignment, an exclusive license, or nonexclusive permission?
- The scope: Which uses, territories, and time periods are covered?
- The parties and law: Who signed, and what governing law applies?
- Re-recording terms: Does the agreement contain any restriction, and when does it apply?
Do not assume there is a standard re-recording restriction or timeframe; those details depend on the agreement. If the language is unclear or the rights have financial significance, have a qualified lawyer review the specific contract.

Does paying for the recording or registering it prove ownership?
Paying for studio time or production does not, by itself, settle who owns the copyright. The applicable law and written agreements matter. In the United States, copyright generally arises automatically when an original work is fixed in a tangible form, while registration provides additional benefits and is generally required before the owner of a U.S. work can bring an infringement action in federal court. Registration and ownership are related but distinct questions. U.S. Copyright Office: What Musicians Should Know about Copyright
Royalty administration is another separate task. The Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC) process concerns claiming certain musical-work royalties; it does not establish ownership of a master or replace Copyright Office registration. U.S. Copyright Office: Music Modernization FAQ
