Larry Birkhead is a photographer. That is the occupation the most recent reporting describes, and it is the one you can state as current. A 2017 ABC News report also said he made a living flipping houses, but nothing in the available reporting confirms that this is still an income source today.

What the current reporting supports

A September 2026 Daily Beast article describes Birkhead as a photographer, which makes photography the only occupation supported by a recent source. The article does not name specific assignments, clients or an income mix, so it confirms the label without describing the work behind it.

  • Photography: the clearest and most current description of his work.
  • House flipping: reported in February 2017 by ABC News, and not confirmed as current.
  • Anna Nicole Smith: a biographical connection, not a documented source of income.

Photography: what is documented and what is his own account

In an older Fox News interview, Birkhead described his work as professional photography and writing. He said he had been taking pictures since 1998 and that he had shifted mainly to photography, and he talked about covering events, including returning to the Kentucky Derby. The interview’s publication date is not stated in the material available, so treat these details as his account at the time he gave it rather than a current résumé.

Birkhead also estimated that he had “a couple hundred thousand or more” images. That is his own estimate from that interview. It has not been independently verified, and it should not be presented as a measured count of his archive.

House flipping: a dated detail

ABC News reported on February 10, 2017 that Birkhead made a living through photography and flipping houses. The same report said he and his daughter Dannielynn lived outside Louisville, Kentucky. This is the most direct statement of the real-estate work, but it is more than eight years old. Later reporting does not confirm that flipping remains part of his income, so it is accurate to mention it only with its date attached.

The Anna Nicole Smith connection

Birkhead is known in public reporting as the father of Dannielynn, the daughter of Anna Nicole Smith. The ABC News report said that he and Dannielynn received no support from Smith’s estate. That point concerns family finances and inheritance, not his occupation, and it does not tell you how he earns a living now.

Claims at a glance

Claim about Birkhead’s work Source Date Status today
He is a photographer The Daily Beast September 10, 2026 Supported by the most recent source
He makes a living through photography and house flipping ABC News February 10, 2017 Dated; flipping not confirmed as current
He has done professional photography and writing, and has taken pictures since 1998 Fox News interview Not stated His own account from that interview
He has “a couple hundred thousand or more” images Fox News interview Not stated His personal estimate, not verified

What the sources do not establish

  • His current clients or specific photography assignments.
  • Whether he still flips houses, or which properties, if any, he owns.
  • His earnings, net worth or any inheritance.

Any article that goes further than these points is adding information the reporting does not contain.

In his own words

Speaking to ABC News, Birkhead said: “You don’t have to be a star to shoot for the stars.” The quote shows how he has described his work publicly, but it is not evidence of his income or the scale of his business.

How to check a public figure’s occupation claims

  1. Note the publication date of every source. A 2017 article can describe a past job without describing a current one.
  2. Separate what a reporter states from what the person says about themselves. Self-reported figures, such as photo counts, should be attributed.
  3. Look for a recent source that uses the same occupation label. A single current description is a stronger basis than an older list of activities.
  4. Do not infer finances from family connections. Estate, inheritance and earnings each need their own documentation.

Applied to Birkhead, the checks leave photography as the current label and house flipping as a dated report.
