It means the seller expects to provide it later—but the word alone does not tell you when you’ll be charged, when it will arrive, or whether you can cancel. Those details depend on the seller’s terms for that item.
What a preorder means
When you preorder something, you place your order before the seller can fulfill it through ordinary shipment, often because the product has not yet been released or restocked. The seller is agreeing to provide the item later under the terms shown in the listing and at checkout. A preorder is not, by itself, a guarantee of a particular arrival date.
When you’ll pay for a preorder
Payment timing varies. A seller may collect the full amount at checkout, take a deposit, or charge later. Shopify describes all three as possible preorder payment models, so check the payment terms before submitting your order: Shopify’s guide to preorders.
For example, Nintendo of America says its eShop processes payment for a game “no sooner than 7 days prior to the game’s release date.” That is Nintendo’s policy, not a general rule for preorders. PlayStation Direct US says it charges for a reservation when the item is ready to ship, following a checkout preauthorization. When a preorder will arrive
A release date is when a product is scheduled to become available; it is not necessarily the date it reaches your door. The seller’s shipping estimate, fulfillment timing, and carrier arrangements affect delivery. Look for the expected shipping or delivery information on the listing and in the order confirmation, and watch for seller updates if the date changes.
Whether you can cancel
Cancellation rights and deadlines depend on the seller and the stage of fulfillment. Read the order’s cancellation terms and act before any stated cutoff. For example, Nintendo says an eShop preorder can be canceled before payment is processed. PlayStation Direct US says a reservation can be canceled until the item enters the shipping process. These are service-specific policies, not promises that every preorder can be canceled on the same terms.

Preorder versus presale
A preorder is an order placed now for an item to be delivered later. A presale usually refers to an early sales period or access window, and the product may already be ready to ship. Retailers sometimes use the terms loosely, so rely on the listing and checkout terms—not the label alone—to understand what you are buying and when it will be fulfilled.

For covered US mail, internet, and telephone orders, the FTC’s rule addresses a seller’s shipping representations and qualifying delays. Depending on the circumstances, the seller must provide a delay notice and obtain the customer’s consent to the delay, or allow cancellation and issue a prompt refund.
