You can buy something with Bitcoin when a specific business accepts it at checkout, or use Bitcoin-funded gift cards and payment cards where those services are available. You can also send Bitcoin to another person or donate it. Acceptance, fees, and terms vary by merchant and country, so check the actual payment option before you rely on it.

What can you buy directly with Bitcoin?

Some local cafés, restaurants, shops, and online stores accept Bitcoin. Depending on the merchant, checkout may use Bitcoin on its main network or the Lightning Network. Bitcoin.org points consumers to BTC Map to look for nearby businesses and describes Bitcoin and Lightning payments for online stores. Treat a directory listing as a lead, not a guarantee: confirm with the specific business or location because acceptance can change.

Bitcoin.org also lists charities and open-source projects among organizations that accept Bitcoin donations. For any recipient, verify the payment instructions using a trusted source before sending.

What are the alternatives when a merchant does not accept Bitcoin?

Route What it can pay for What to check
Direct payment Goods or services from a business that offers Bitcoin or Lightning at checkout Whether that exact merchant and location accept it, which network they use, and their refund terms.
Gift card or prepaid service Purchases from some brands that do not take Bitcoin directly; available examples can include retail, travel, gaming, food, phone refills, and data products. Country-specific inventory, redemption restrictions, exchange or service costs, and the gift card’s terms.
Bitcoin-funded payment card Purchases at businesses that accept the card network, with Bitcoin converted to local currency through the card service. Whether the card is available in your country, conversion and other fees, and the provider’s terms.
Person-to-person transfer or donation A transfer to someone who accepts Bitcoin or a donation to an organization that provides Bitcoin payment instructions. Recipient details, network fees, and any applicable local tax rules.

Gift cards and prepaid products

Services such as Bitrefill let customers use Bitcoin for certain gift cards and prepaid products, extending the places where they may be able to spend it. The catalog is not universal. Bitrefill’s storefront localized to Belgium displayed examples across retail, travel, gaming, food, phone refills, and eSIMs; that selection should not be assumed to be available in other countries. Check the current catalog and redemption rules for your location before paying.

Payment cards

A Bitcoin-funded card can provide another route: the service converts Bitcoin to local currency when you pay, allowing a transaction at a merchant that accepts the card’s network even if it does not take Bitcoin directly. Card availability, conversion and service fees, and supported jurisdictions vary. Paying with such a card is not the same as the retailer accepting Bitcoin.

How does paying with Bitcoin work?

At checkout, a merchant may provide a payment address, QR code, or payment link. Your wallet may also be able to scan a QR code or use a supported NFC reader for an in-person payment. The merchant specifies the amount and payment network; your wallet displays the payment request for you to review and confirm. Some merchants offer Lightning, which Bitcoin.org says supports near-instant transfers, including small amounts, with minimal fees. Actual speed and fees depend on the route and conditions.

  1. Confirm the merchant and payment instructions. Use the merchant’s own checkout or another trusted channel rather than an address copied from an unverified source.
  2. Check the amount and network. Make sure the wallet is set to the network the merchant requests and that the amount and recipient details match the checkout.
  3. Review the total cost. Account for any wallet network fee and, for a card or gift-card service, its conversion or service costs.
  4. Confirm only when the details are correct. Bitcoin payments are generally not reversible, so an error may be difficult or impossible to recover.

What should you compare before spending?

  • Acceptance: Does the specific business or location take Bitcoin directly, or are you using a separate gift-card or card service?
  • Availability: Does the service support your country and the product you want?
  • Total cost: Include the network fee and any card, conversion, or service fees. Costs differ by provider and payment route; no universal fee amount applies.
  • Network: Check whether checkout requires an on-chain Bitcoin payment or supports Lightning. A wallet and payment request must use compatible networks.
  • Terms: Review the merchant’s checkout and refund terms, gift-card redemption conditions, or card-provider rules before committing.
  • Tax and records: Bitcoin spending may have tax consequences depending on local rules. Requirements differ by jurisdiction, so check the rules that apply where you live.

Bitcoin transactions are recorded publicly, which can have privacy implications. The Bitcoin price also changes, so the value of the Bitcoin you spend may fluctuate relative to local currency.

Can you use Bitcoin everywhere?

No. Bitcoin acceptance is specific to participating merchants, and a chain’s locations may not all offer the same payment option. Gift-card catalogs and payment-card services are also limited by country and provider terms. BTC Map can help you find possible local options, but confirm acceptance with the business before making plans. There is no current, independently established figure in the cited sources for the total number of Bitcoin-accepting merchants or the share of purchases made with Bitcoin.
