It is not a uniform checklist: the rules and exceptions depend on the right, the jurisdiction, and your circumstances.
What does turning 18 mean legally?
Eighteen is generally the age of majority in the United States, but that does not make every law identical nationwide. A September 17, 2026 opinion from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel says at least 44 states and the District of Columbia set a presumptive age of majority at 18, while discussing state-law variations and exceptions, including Nebraska and Mississippi. That figure is the opinion’s statement, not a current state-by-state legal survey.
For a particular legal question, check the law of your state and the relevant agency or court. The age at which someone can exercise a specific right may be affected by separate eligibility rules.
Can you vote when you turn 18?
Yes, if you meet the other requirements. The Twenty-Sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution says: “The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.” Ratified in 1971, the amendment lowered the voting age to 18 for all elections.

Age alone does not establish eligibility. In general, you must be a U.S. citizen, satisfy your state’s residency and registration rules, and be 18 on or before Election Day. Noncitizens generally cannot vote in federal, state, or most local elections, although some local jurisdictions allow noncitizens to vote in local elections. Eligibility after a felony conviction and certain other restrictions vary by state.
Registering and checking local rules
There is no single national voter-registration deadline or procedure. Some states allow preregistration before age 18, and some let certain 17-year-olds vote in a primary if they will be 18 by the general election. States also differ on registration deadlines, whether you can register on Election Day, and voter identification requirements.

Check your state or local election office for the rules and deadlines that apply to your address. Vote.gov’s guidance for people 18 and under also explains how to check state and territory procedures.
Do you have to vote?
No. U.S. citizens are not legally required to vote in local, state, or presidential elections.

Can you serve on a jury at 18?
Age 18 is the minimum age for federal jury service, not a guarantee that you will be summoned or qualify. Federal eligibility includes U.S. citizenship, primary residence in the federal district for at least one year, and the ability to read, write, understand, and speak English. Additional qualifications and exclusions apply.
Felony-related rules, exemptions, and possible excusals can affect eligibility or whether you serve. State and local court jury rules are separate from federal rules, so consult the court that issued a summons or your state court system for the requirements that apply.

Can you join the military at 18?
Eighteen meets the minimum enlistment age for many military routes, but the exact age limits and standards depend on the branch and the route. A person’s eligibility can also depend on citizenship or residency, education, aptitude testing, medical standards, and fitness requirements. Waivers or other circumstances may affect an individual decision.
Use USAGov’s current branch-by-branch enlistment guidance, then speak with the relevant branch or a recruiter to confirm your eligibility. Published age ranges are guidance, not an individual determination.

Can you access or correct your federal records?
The federal Privacy Act provides specified rights to request access to, and seek correction of, certain records held by federal agencies about you. Those rights are subject to exemptions and apply to covered agency records; they are not a general right to access or edit all personal data held by every organization.
USAGov’s Privacy Act guidance explains how to request copies of covered government files. Check the relevant agency’s process and the rules for the records you want.
