Judged by historical importance, production longevity, documented sales, influential features and lasting recognition, the Waterloo Boy N, Model D, Model A and 4020 stand out. A current 8R 250 offers a brief look at how far Deere’s tractor lineup has since evolved.
How to judge the greatest Deere tractors
“Greatest” depends on what matters: a machine can be historically important without having the longest production run, and strong sales do not by themselves prove technical superiority. This selection weighs five factors: a tractor’s role in Deere’s history, longevity, documented adoption, meaningful technical or operator-facing changes, and continuing recognition.
John Deere’s own historical materials identify several of these machines as important, but do not publish an objective all-time ranking. The choices below are therefore an editorial judgment grounded in those criteria, not an official Deere verdict.
Waterloo Boy N: Deere’s tractor-business starting point
Deere entered the tractor business in 1918 by purchasing Waterloo Gas Engine Company. Deere’s FAQ identifies the Waterloo Boy N as the first tractor developed through that acquisition; it was produced from 1917 to 1924. The dates distinguish the machine’s production from Deere’s entry into the business: the Waterloo Boy N was not a tractor Deere invented from scratch. Deere also notes that it appeared in the first Nebraska Tractor Test run. John Deere’s FAQ

#1 Best Overall
- 1/16 John Deere Early Styled A Prestige Collection Tractor Toy - LP82797.
- Model A.
- The Prestige Collection of tractors have a high level of detail from the front weights to the authentic style rear drawbar.
- This tractors features die-case body, narrow front axle, authentic graphics and replica rear hitch. The air intake and exhaust are painted green replicating how the tractor looked when it left the factory.
- Age grade: 14+ Measures approx.: 8" x 5" x 4".
The Waterloo Boy N belongs on the list because it marks the beginning of Deere’s tractor story and connects the company to early formal tractor testing. Its significance is as an origin point, not as evidence that Deere created the tractor itself.
Model D: a record-setting production run
John Deere says the Model D was produced from 1923 to 1953, the longest production run in the company’s tractor history. Deere’s collector publication traces it to a preproduction “Style D” and describes the Model D as an American icon. John Deere’s Model D history
Rank #2
- Authentic John Deere Design – Officially licensed 1:32 scale replica of the John Deere 4240 tractor, built for collectors and farm toy enthusiasts.
- Durable Die-Cast Build – Constructed with a die-cast body and sturdy plastic parts for lasting durability and realistic detail.
- Steerable Wide Front Axle – Front wheels are steerable, providing interactive play and realistic tractor maneuvering.
- 2WD Drivetrain with Front Weights – Features a 2-wheel drive configuration and front weights for added authenticity.
- Detailed Cab Interior – Clear cab windows reveal a highly detailed interior, true to the real John Deere 4240 design.
Three decades of production make the Model D an exceptional example of staying power and recognition. That record does not establish that it was the best-performing tractor of its time; the historical case for it rests on longevity and cultural significance.
Model A: a turning point for row-crop work
Introduced in 1934, the Model A was Deere’s first true row-crop tractor with adjustable wheel tread, according to the company’s FAQ. Deere says the Model B followed soon after. John Deere’s FAQ

Rank #3
- Authentic Die-Cast Construction – Built with durable die-cast metal for lasting play and display.
- Classic 1/16 Scale Model – Realistic replica of the John Deere 330 Utility Tractor in a collectible size.
- Detailed Design – Configured with a wide front axle and single rear wheels for true-to-life accuracy.
- Great for Kids & Collectors – Suitable for imaginative farm play or as a high-quality addition to any John Deere collection.
- Recommended Age – Designed for children ages 3 and up.
Adjustable wheel spacing made the Model A a useful milestone in adapting tractor design to row-crop field work. It earns a place for that role in Deere’s history, rather than for a documented sales record comparable to the 4020’s.
4020: adoption and operator-focused changes
Launched in 1964 and produced through 1972, the 4020 sold 183,000 units during its production period, mostly in the United States, according to a John Deere article published in 2014 for the model’s 50th anniversary. That is the clearest adoption figure among the tractors covered here. John Deere’s 4020 history
Rank #4
- Designed for Play
- Featuring die-cast hood, grille, body and heavy duty rear fenders.
- The soft feel front and rear tires are mounted on plastic wheels
- The rear hitch allows most 1:16 implements to be attached.
Deere associates the 4020’s appeal with its increased power in a maneuverable machine and its Power Shift transmission. The company also describes a longer rear axle that could accommodate dual wheels and hydraulic front-wheel drive to improve field traction. Deere explicitly says the 4020 was not its first six-cylinder diesel tractor.
Roll-Gard rollover protection entered the picture in 1966 and was then made available to the tractor industry. That timing matters: the history does not establish that every 4020 had Roll-Gard as standard equipment when the model first launched.

Hans-Christian Quick, who oversees Deere’s archives in Mannheim, Germany, recalled that the 4020 “was miles ahead of the European competition.” This is an attributed recollection, not the result of a cited comparative test. Taken together, the sales figure and operator-facing features make the 4020 the strongest choice here for broad documented adoption.

As a present-day reference point, Deere’s US product page lists the 8R 250 at 250 rated horsepower and 275 maximum horsepower under the power measurement standard stated on the page. It lists e23 PowerShift and IVT transmission options. These are specifications for the current 8R 250 product listing accessed in October 2026, not a direct performance comparison with historical tractors: horsepower standards and configurations differ across generations, and product specifications can change. The 8R illustrates the modern end of Deere’s tractor story, but the available figures do not make it an all-time historical winner on the same evidence used to assess the older models.

Which one is the greatest?
The answer depends on the measure: the Waterloo Boy N is the origin story, the Model D leads on production longevity, the Model A marks a row-crop design milestone, and the 4020 has the strongest documented sales case in this group. The 8R 250 belongs as a modern point of comparison, not as a like-for-like historical ranking. Deere’s published figures support those distinctions, but do not provide a standardized dataset for declaring one tractor objectively best across every generation.
