Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf you owe the IRS, you can pay the balance in full, pay what you can now and arrange the rest, apply to pay within 180 days or in monthly installments, or ask whether you qualify for limited relief. The right route depends on the balance, your filing status, ability to pay, and whether you agree with the amount. Start with your IRS notice or IRS online account; an inability to pay and a disagreement with the bill are different issues.
What are my payment options if I owe the IRS?
These options are not interchangeable: some send money toward the debt, some spread payments over time, and a few may delay collection or reduce part of what you owe if you qualify.
| Option | What it does | Key conditions or costs |
|---|---|---|
| Pay in full or make a partial payment | Applies money to your balance. | A partial payment alone does not create a payment plan; check the account and consider an arrangement for what remains. |
| Short-term payment plan | Allows eligible individuals to pay within 180 days. | No setup fee; interest and penalties continue until the balance is paid. |
| Long-term installment agreement | Splits eligible debt into monthly payments. | Eligibility, setup fees, and application requirements vary; interest and penalties continue. |
| Offer in compromise | May settle tax debt for less than the full amount. | Only for eligible taxpayers; the IRS considers specified grounds and financial circumstances. |
| Temporary collection delay | May defer collection if you cannot pay now. | Requires IRS review and does not erase the debt. |
| Penalty relief | May remove or reduce qualifying penalties. | Conditional; it does not automatically eliminate tax or interest. |
The IRS says you can file without paying the full amount immediately, but unpaid balances can continue to accrue penalties and interest. See the IRS overview of tax debt help for the official routes.
What if I can’t pay my IRS bill?
Pay as much as you reasonably can by the due date, then review the remaining balance in your IRS account and choose an appropriate arrangement. A partial payment reduces the balance but does not by itself stop collection or establish monthly terms. If you need more time, compare the short-term plan with a monthly installment agreement; if neither is manageable, ask the IRS about a temporary collection delay or whether another relief option fits your circumstances.

Can I pay the IRS in installments?
Individuals may apply online for a short-term plan or a long-term monthly plan. The IRS payment-plan page, updated March 3, 2026, lists the following online individual thresholds. These are not universal limits for every taxpayer category or application route.
| Plan | Online individual threshold | Repayment period | Fee and ongoing charges |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short-term | Combined tax, penalties, and interest below $100,000. | 180 days or less. | No setup fee; interest and penalties continue until paid. |
| Long-term installment agreement | Combined tax, penalties, and interest of $50,000 or less; all required returns must be filed. | Monthly payments. | Setup fee varies by direct debit versus other payment methods and application route; interest and penalties continue. |
For both plans, exact eligibility and terms depend on your account. The IRS describes low-income fee treatment that varies by payment type, and fee schedules can change; verify the current details on the online payment agreement application when applying. Do not assume a particular monthly payment or payoff date without reviewing your balance and circumstances.

The IRS lists bank-account payments, debit or credit cards, digital wallets, same-day wire, checks or money orders, and cash. Availability depends on the type of payment. Bank-account payment is free through IRS Direct Pay; card, wallet, and wire options may carry fees. Check the IRS’s current payment options before choosing a method.
Use Direct Pay for a bank-account payment
IRS Direct Pay is a free service that takes payment from a bank account. Choose the payment reason and tax year, then complete identity verification. If you are making a payment to extend filing time, remember that an extension gives more time to file—not more time to pay. The IRS also cautions that a second filer assessed separately for a joint return should not use Direct Pay to pay that separate share.

An offer in compromise (OIC) asks the IRS to accept less than the full balance. It is a conditional option, not a standard discount. The IRS identifies three possible grounds:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Doubt as to collectability: your income and assets are insufficient to pay the full amount.
- Effective tax administration: paying in full would create economic hardship or be unfair or inequitable.
- Doubt as to liability: you believe the amount assessed is wrong.
Use the IRS Offer in Compromise pre-qualifier to assess whether you may be eligible. Meeting a preliminary screen does not guarantee acceptance; the IRS evaluates the case. Do not assume a settlement company can secure approval.

What if I can’t pay now, or need penalty relief?
If you cannot pay at present, ask the IRS whether you qualify for a temporary delay of collection. A delay does not cancel the underlying tax debt, and account-specific collection consequences depend on your circumstances. The IRS also offers penalty relief in qualifying cases; penalty relief is distinct from removing the tax balance, and interest may be treated separately. Start with the guidance on tax debt help and your notice or online account.
What if I think the IRS amount is wrong?
Do not treat a disputed balance as merely a payment-method problem. Contact the number on your notice or review the IRS information about appeals. If the amount is wrong, the route for challenging it is separate from arranging payment. Bankruptcy can also affect which options are available; the IRS notes that some may not be available until the bankruptcy is resolved, so get case-specific guidance.
Does an extension give me more time to pay?
No. A filing extension extends the time to file a return, not the deadline to pay the tax due. Interest and penalties may accrue on an unpaid balance after the payment deadline. Direct Pay’s instructions state: “This is an extension of time to file and not an extension of time to pay.” Check the relevant IRS Direct Pay instructions if using that service to make an extension-related payment.
