An insurance premium is the payment you make to keep an insurance policy active. It is the price of coverage—not the deductible you may owe after a covered claim. How much you pay and which factors affect the price depend on the type of insurance, the insurer, and the rules where the policy is sold.

What an insurance premium pays for

Your premium is the scheduled payment required to maintain coverage under your policy. Depending on the policy, payments may be due weekly, monthly, twice a year, or annually. The policy sets out what events and losses are covered; paying the premium does not mean every service or loss is covered. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) explains that “The price is set based on your individual risk.”

How a premium differs from a deductible and other costs

A premium is what you pay to keep coverage in force. A deductible is the amount you pay toward a covered claim before the insurer pays its share. For example, if a covered auto repair costs $2,000 and your policy has a $500 deductible, you generally pay the deductible and the insurer pays the covered remainder, subject to the policy’s terms and limits. A deductible is not the same as a premium, copayment, or the total cost of care or a claim. NAIC’s consumer guide describes the premium and deductible distinction.

How insurers set premiums

Insurers use underwriting to assess risk and rating to assign a price. In general, they consider the expected likelihood and cost of claims, along with the coverage selected and applicable rating factors. There is no single formula that applies to every insurer, policy, or jurisdiction. Factors that matter for one type of policy may not apply to another, and state rules can limit which factors insurers may use. NAIC’s explanation of premium increases discusses expected future claims and differences in state law.

Factors that can affect premiums by policy type

Auto insurance

In the United States, auto insurers may consider factors such as where you live, your age and driving experience, your driving and claims history, your vehicle, how you use it, and miles driven. The coverage you select and its deductible also matter. Rating rules and permitted factors vary by state. NAIC’s auto insurance guide outlines these factors.

Choosing a higher deductible or removing optional coverage may lower the premium, if the policy offers that choice. The trade-off is that you could pay more yourself after a covered loss or have less protection. Changing coverage is not always available or appropriate for every policyholder.

Homeowners insurance

Home insurance premiums can reflect location, claims history, the home’s age and condition, the deductible, and the estimated cost to rebuild the home and replace its contents. Rebuilding cost is not the same as the property’s market value: the estimate concerns the cost of reconstruction, not what the home might sell for. Insurers can charge different premiums for similar coverage. NAIC’s consumer guide to home insurance discusses these pricing considerations.

U.S. Health Insurance Marketplace plans

For U.S. individual and small-group Health Insurance Marketplace plans, HealthCare.gov lists five factors that affect premiums: location, age, tobacco use, plan category, and whether the plan covers dependents. This list applies to those Marketplace plans; it should not be assumed to describe every health policy or every country. HealthCare.gov explains the Marketplace factors.

How to compare insurance quotes

A lower premium is not automatically the better deal. Compare quotes on equivalent terms so you can see whether the price difference reflects a genuine saving or less protection.

  • Match the policy type and coverage limits.
  • Compare deductible amounts and how the deductible applies.
  • Check covered events, exclusions, and any add-ons you need.
  • Compare payment schedules as well as the headline price.
  • For homeowners insurance, compare rebuild or replacement coverage rather than relying on the home’s market value.

Since insurers can price similar coverage differently, comparing more than one quote can help you assess the available options.
