A Walmart “dark store” is a retail location set up to fulfill online orders rather than serve walk-in shoppers. Walmart’s official term for related automated facilities built within or added to stores is Accelerated Pickup and Delivery (APD), previously called market fulfillment centers (MFCs). The terms overlap, but they are not interchangeable: an APD/MFC can be part of an operating store, while “dark store” reporting refers to a fulfillment-only location.
What does “Walmart dark store” mean?
“Dark store” is an industry term for a retail site that does not function as a conventional shop for walk-in customers. Instead, it is organized around assembling online orders for pickup or delivery. It is not the official name Walmart uses for its automated store-fulfillment facilities.
Walmart calls those facilities Accelerated Pickup and Delivery, or APD. The company used the name market fulfillment center (MFC) before adopting APD on January 9, 2025. Walmart describes an MFC as a compact, modular warehouse built within or added to a store. An MFC is therefore not necessarily a separate, closed retail site.
How does Walmart’s APD/MFC order fulfillment work?
The process combines automated retrieval with employee picking. In Walmart’s explanation, bots bring stored items to a picking workstation. Personal shoppers may still hand-select fresh foods such as produce, meat and seafood, as well as large general merchandise kept on the sales floor. Once assembled, an order can be held for a customer’s pickup or collected by a delivery driver.

Walmart said MFC inventory was separate from the inventory on the store floor. That distinction helps explain how an automated facility can operate alongside a customer-facing store without simply being another aisle shoppers browse.
Are Walmart dark stores open to customers?
A location described as a dark store is fulfillment-focused and does not have the usual walk-in shopping experience. But the label should not be applied to every Walmart APD/MFC: Walmart’s official description includes facilities located inside or added to stores that continue serving shoppers.

In 2025, industry reports described a Dallas fulfillment-only pilot as open and a Bentonville, Arkansas, site as planned. Those reports do not establish whether either location remains open or what handoff options it currently offers. Walmart’s APD name, by contrast, describes its automated pickup-and-delivery facility model, not a promise that a site is closed to shoppers.
How dark stores fit Walmart’s wider fulfillment network
Dark stores and APD/MFC facilities are one part of a broader system. Walmart also uses its retail stores for pickup and delivery and operates dedicated eCommerce fulfillment centers and other fulfillment methods. The practical differences are customer access, whether the facility is integrated into a store or separate, how inventory is held, whether picking is automated or manual, and how orders are handed off.

What is known—and not known—about the reported locations?
The Dallas and Bentonville examples come from 2025 industry reporting, not an official Walmart announcement establishing a current network. Dallas was described as a pilot that had opened; Bentonville was described as planned. The reporting does not verify either site’s status as of October 8, 2026, or provide a current site-by-site account of customer access, inventory, or order handoff. They should be treated as dated examples, not a current count of Walmart dark stores.
