West Perth Football Club withdrew its application for a $30,000 sponsorship proposal after Joondalup council approved it with amendments that the club interpreted as tying the funding to a move toward the name “Joondalup Falcons.” Mayor Albert Jacob said the funding did not depend on a name change; the City wanted the club to reconsider its name. The two accounts were not reconciled publicly.
What was the $30,000 proposal?
West Perth sought $30,000 excluding GST from the City of Joondalup for exclusive naming and streaming rights during the 2024 WAFL season, according to the City’s council proposal materials. City of Joondalup council proposal materials
The council considered the proposal in late February 2024 and approved it subject to conditions. One condition required the final agreement to return to council for endorsement. Council also added a request that the club consider a permanent name change to Joondalup Football Club or Joondalup Falcons Football Club. City of Joondalup council proposal materials PerthNow report
Why did West Perth withdraw the application?
CEO Joe McCarthy said the club’s original proposal did not involve changing its name. West Perth announced it was rejecting the amended proposal and withdrawing its application after the naming amendment was added. In the club’s account, approval had become tied to moving toward “Joondalup Falcons.” McCarthy said: “We are and always will be the West Perth Football Club.” West Perth Football Club statement

Did Joondalup make West Perth change its name?
The parties described the amendment differently. McCarthy said the club treated it as a condition of the amended proposal and withdrew on that basis. Mayor Albert Jacob told PerthNow that the funding did not depend on a name change: “The funding did not depend on the club changing its name.” He said council wanted the club to reconsider a name that reflected its home of 30 years. Jacob said the City was disappointed by the withdrawal, respected the club’s decision and would welcome a future funding application. PerthNow report
Those are separate attributed accounts, not an agreed interpretation of the council’s decision. Without a formal agreement or fuller council record establishing the amendment’s effect, it is not possible to resolve the disagreement as a definitive legal conclusion.

What happened at the council vote?
PerthNow reported that the amendment requiring the agreement to return for final approval passed 11–2. The request that the club consider a name change passed 12–1, and the final proposal with conditions passed 12–1. The vote counts show how the reported motions passed; they do not establish that the club and mayor agreed on whether naming was a funding condition. PerthNow report
What did the club say it could lose by changing its name?
McCarthy estimated that changing the name could mean $30,000 in City funding but $150,000 in potential sponsor income lost, as reported by PerthNow. The $150,000 figure was his estimate of possible losses, not an audited amount or independently verified forecast. PerthNow report

Does the 2024 dispute mean the City stopped supporting West Perth?
No. The City’s current corporate sponsorship listing includes West Perth Football Club Inc. at $15,000 for a separate “WAFLW Team Sponsors 2026” partnership. This is later support, not the withdrawn 2024 proposal. The City says support is not recurring and applications are assessed independently. City of Joondalup corporate sponsorship page
