No current strike dates or affected-flight list are confirmed by the sources available for this report. The Fair Work Commission (FWC) record that surfaced concerns a Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VARA) bargaining case from 2023, which was discontinued and closed—not a current strike notice. Passengers should check Virgin Australia’s live flight information and seek confirmation from their booking provider before changing travel plans.
Are Virgin aircraft engineers preparing to strike?
The available official material does not confirm that VARA engineers are preparing to strike, or that industrial action has been scheduled. The relevant FWC case record says VARA applied on 8 June 2023 for an intractable bargaining declaration relating to a proposed Western Australia aircraft engineers agreement. The application was discontinued on 20 July 2023 and the case is closed. That record establishes the status of the 2023 proceeding only; it does not establish the status of later bargaining or any current industrial action. See the Fair Work Commission.
A separate FWC filing from the same bargaining period identifies the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA) as a bargaining representative. It is historical context, not notice of a current strike. A current, dated announcement from Virgin Australia, ALAEA or the FWC would be needed to verify whether action is planned, when it might occur, and what it would cover.
Which WA regional or FIFO flights could be affected?
No current list of affected routes, flights or charter operations is established. FWC material describes VARA’s business as including WA regional services and resource-sector FIFO charter operations. Such charters can serve remote or regional worksites and may be contracted rather than sold as public passenger flights. That operational context does not show that any particular service is at risk now.

For a scheduled public booking, use Virgin Australia’s flight-status tools. For a contracted FIFO itinerary, contact the employer, chartering company or travel arranger named on the booking. Public airline disruption guidance does not establish what remedies apply to every private charter agreement.
What should passengers do now?
- Check the specific booking. Use Virgin Australia’s official flight disruption guidance, flight-status information and app for current updates. Keep the contact details associated with the booking current so you can receive notices.
- Wait for confirmation before changing plans. The material available does not identify a confirmed strike or affected flight. Do not assume a booking is disrupted based only on a general headline.
- If your flight is changed or cancelled, follow the airline’s instructions. Virgin Australia describes rebooking onto the next available Virgin Australia flight at no extra cost, travel credits, and refunds where eligible. The option available depends on the circumstances and applicable policy.
- For a FIFO charter, contact the itinerary provider. Ask the employer, charter operator or travel arranger to confirm whether the contracted service is operating and what alternatives or assistance the agreement provides.
What support may be available if a flight is disrupted?
Virgin Australia’s published guidance outlines rebooking, travel credits and refunds where eligible. It also says accommodation, meals and transfers may be provided for some disruptions within the airline’s control. These are policy-based options, not a guarantee that every passenger qualifies for every form of assistance. Check the terms that apply to your booking and the airline’s current instructions.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the 2023 FWC case does not establish a current disruption
The FWC’s closed 2023 proceeding records a past bargaining dispute, not a present operational warning. A closed case cannot confirm whether later negotiations occurred, whether employees have voted on action, or whether any action has been scheduled. Likewise, the absence of a VARA result in a displayed portion of the FWC’s rolling ballot register would not by itself prove that no separate current notice exists. Passengers need a current primary announcement or direct confirmation for their own flight.
