Verdesian and Truterra’s 2021 On-Farm Sustainability Trial Plans

The 2021 Verdesian–Truterra announcement outlined proposed U.S. trials of a nitrogen stabilizer and cover-crop seed treatments, but did not report whether the trials happened or what they found.

Verdesian Life Sciences and Truterra announced a collaboration on October 20, 2021, to plan U.S. field trials pairing Verdesian products with Truterra’s sustainability tool. The announcement said the trials would begin in 2022, but the available reports do not establish whether they took place or what they found. The plan focused on two questions: whether Trident nitrogen stabilizer could protect against nitrogen loss and affect crop yields, and whether two seed treatments could help cover crops establish.

What the collaboration proposed

The companies framed the work as a way for growers to assess conservation-related technologies on their own fields before considering broader adoption. Truterra, LLC was identified in the announcement as the sustainability business of Land O’Lakes, Inc.; Verdesian was described as a provider of nutrient-use-efficiency technology solutions. The announcement characterized the collaboration as an initial step that could evolve, not as a completed program or a report of results. Verdesian’s October 20, 2021 announcement and CropLife’s October 24, 2021 report describe the planned work.

Two proposed trial tracks

Trident nitrogen stabilizer

The first track was to test Trident nitrogen stabilizer, with the stated aim of measuring protection against nitrogen loss and effects on crop yield. These were proposed measures, not demonstrated product benefits. The reports do not give a protocol, comparison group, crop or soil breakdown, sample size, measured values, or trial results.

SEED+ Liquid and Take Off ST

The second track was to test SEED+ Liquid and Take Off ST seed treatments for their potential to accelerate cover-crop establishment. The announcement states that objective but supplies no establishment measurements or findings. It does not establish that either treatment improved results relative to an alternative.

How growers were expected to participate

For each participating field, growers were to work with a local Truterra agricultural retailer to establish a sustainability baseline. The plan then called for tracking progress through both sustainability and profitability perspectives over the course of the trial.

The announcement does not define the sustainability or profitability metrics, explain how they would be calculated, or publish a trial protocol. It therefore offers no basis for estimating financial returns, environmental effects, or the risk reduction a grower might experience.

What is known about timing and outcomes

Verdesian’s October 20, 2021 announcement said, “The trials will begin in 2022.” That is a planned start date, not confirmation that trials began or finished. The available announcement and corroborating coverage do not report an enrollment count, acreage, completion date, or performance statistic. Successful Farming’s October 20, 2021 coverage also reported on the announcement; it does not establish trial outcomes.

Accordingly, the public material supports describing the collaboration’s intended design, but not claiming that the named products reduced nitrogen loss, raised yields, accelerated cover-crop establishment, or improved profitability.

Who was quoted in the announcement

Kenny Avery was identified as Verdesian Life Sciences CEO and Jason Weller as Truterra president at the time. Their comments explained the rationale the companies gave for the project, rather than supplying independent evidence of trial performance.

“At Verdesian, our business is built on the belief that sustainability and profitability go hand in hand, and we are thrilled to be teaming up with Truterra, a farmer-owned cooperative that shares this core principle of pragmatic sustainability.”

— Kenny Avery, identified as Verdesian Life Sciences CEO in the 2021 announcement

“Adopting new conservation practices can be an expensive and risky proposition, so innovation trials are one critical tool to help farmers test drive practice changes on their farms with reduced risk before implementing more widely across their operations, and we are excited to be collaborating with Verdesian to provide this tool to farmers across our footprint.”

— Jason Weller, identified as Truterra president in the 2021 announcement

Commercial context and limits

The announcement also referred to a longstanding WinField United–Verdesian relationship involving fertilizer additives, nitrogen stabilizers, plant nutrition products, inoculants, and seed-enhancement products. That historical context does not confirm the relationship’s present status, nor does the announcement establish current product labels, availability, or pricing. Growers considering these inputs would need current information from the companies or an agricultural retailer.
