Fargo (1996) Cast: What’s Known About the Actors’ Net Worth

Available film and career records identify the Fargo (1996) cast and roles, but do not establish comparable net-worth figures. Here’s what can be verified—and why a ranking would be misleading.

A reliable, source-backed net-worth ranking of the Fargo (1996) cast cannot be established from the available attributable sources. Those sources document the film’s performers, roles and career history, but do not verify the actors’ personal wealth. Rather than present unsupported dollar figures as facts, this article identifies the principal cast and explains what a credible ranking would require.

Why a verified net-worth ranking isn’t available

Net worth is a private financial estimate, not a figure established by an acting credit, award, box-office record or interview. The reviewed film and career sources do not provide comparable, attributable net-worth figures for the principal performers. Online celebrity-wealth numbers may exist, but without a dated source and transparent method they should be treated as unverified estimates—not confirmed or audited facts.

A defensible ranking would need a dated estimate for each actor, a clear account of who produced it, and a comparable method. Without those elements, ordering the cast by dollar amount would imply more certainty than the evidence supports.

The principal cast and their roles

AFI’s catalog documents these five principal roles. Working Title Films also identifies Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, Peter Stormare and John Carroll Lynch among the film’s stars; John Carroll Lynch’s character is not among the five principal roles listed below.

Performer Role What the available sources establish about net worth
Frances McDormand Marge Gunderson No attributable, comparable personal net-worth figure established.
Steve Buscemi Carl Showalter No attributable, comparable personal net-worth figure established.
Peter Stormare Gaear Grimsrud No attributable, comparable personal net-worth figure established.
William H. Macy Jerry Lundegaard No attributable, comparable personal net-worth figure established.
Harve Presnell Wade Gustafson No attributable, comparable personal net-worth figure established.

These are the principal roles, not the complete credited ensemble. The BFI’s compiled credits also document performers including Kristin Rudrüd as Jean Lundegaard and Tony Denman as Scotty Lundegaard. “Cast” can therefore mean either the leading performers or everyone credited; a ranking needs to state which group it covers.

What the film’s records do—and don’t—say about money

Fargo was directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. Working Title Films lists its release date as April 5, 1996. The Numbers lists a production budget of $7,000,000, but the reviewed page does not state the publication year for that figure. A production budget is a film cost, not a measure of what any cast member earned or owned.

Working Title Films records Frances McDormand’s Academy Award win for leading actress and the Coens’ screenplay award. AFI’s history places Fargo at No. 84 on its 1998 “100 Years…100 Movies” list. These are verifiable parts of the film’s history, but awards and recognition do not establish personal wealth.

The Television Academy archive includes William H. Macy discussing his determination and success in being cast in Fargo in an interview conducted February 2, 2016. That interview offers career context, not evidence of his compensation or net worth.

How to assess a published celebrity-wealth estimate

  • Check attribution and date. Look for a named publisher and the date the estimate was made or updated.
  • Look for a method. A number without an explanation of how it was calculated is difficult to assess.
  • Compare like with like. Estimates need to cover the same people and use sufficiently comparable methods before their order means anything.
  • Separate career facts from wealth claims. Film credits, awards, budgets and interviews can document professional history, but do not independently verify assets or liabilities.

For context about the film itself, Working Title Films documents its release, stars and awards; AFI’s catalog lists principal roles and the film’s place on the 1998 list. The BFI’s compiled credits provide additional ensemble names. None of these records supplies a comparable personal-wealth ranking.
