When Upwork phone verification fails, the cause is usually one of four things: the code is not reaching your phone, the number is not an eligible type, the number is already tied to an existing Upwork account, or you no longer have access to the phone. Upwork’s help guidance says a verification code should be sent instantly, so a code that has not arrived after a few minutes is worth acting on. A single delay, though, does not on its own mean your account is blocked. This guide shows how to tell which situation applies and what to do in each one.
Identify which situation applies
Four questions sort most cases. The table below compares the common paths by eligibility, access, account linkage, and the recovery route that fits each one.

Step 1: Check the number and the code delivery
Start here whenever the code simply does not show up. These checks cost nothing and resolve many cases.
- Confirm the country code and every digit of the number, entered in the format the verification screen requests.
- Confirm the phone has working cellular or landline service at the moment you request the code. A phone in airplane mode or without signal will not receive a text.
- Request one code and wait. Upwork’s help article on verifying a phone number states: “Your verification code should be sent instantly.” If nothing arrives within a few minutes, treat that as the point to move on to the next check.
- If your phone or carrier filters text messages from unknown senders, check the spam or blocked-message settings for codes that may have been held back.
- Request a new code only after waiting. Requesting several codes in a row does not speed delivery, and only the most recent code is normally the one to use.
If the code still does not arrive and the number is a standard mobile or landline number, the problem is most likely account-specific. Go to the sections on linked numbers and lost phones below.

Eligible numbers: why VoIP numbers are rejected
Upwork states that it cannot verify VoIP numbers and asks users to use a different, non-VoIP number. Its two-step verification instructions specify a standard landline or mobile number for SMS codes. Google Voice and similar app-based or internet numbers are generally VoIP numbers, so they fall under this restriction even when they receive texts normally on your device.
The fix is to use a standard mobile or landline number that you can receive texts on. This guide does not recommend virtual or temporary numbers, or paid VoIP services, as a way around the restriction.

When the number is already tied to another account
Upwork’s guidance is that a person can have only one account, which may be used as a freelancer, a client, or an agency. If your number is already linked to an account, that account is the one to recover. Creating a second account to get past the verification screen can lead to suspension, so do not try it.
Recover the existing account
- Open the Upwork login screen.
- Use the password-reset route for the account associated with your number.
- Follow the reset steps to the email address on the account. Upwork’s help pages describe the reset as the standard route for this situation.
If the email on the account is inaccessible
If you can no longer reach the email address on the account, contact Upwork support through the Contact Support link in the Help Center. Have the number, the name on the profile, and any details that show ownership of the account ready before you write.

If you do not remember which account uses the number
Search your email for messages from Upwork over the years you used the platform. Account notices usually show the address the account was opened with, which is the starting point for the reset.
When you no longer have the phone
Upwork recommends setting up more than one two-step verification method so that losing one phone does not lock you out. The methods Upwork describes are SMS to an eligible number, an authenticator app, a mobile-app prompt, and a security question.

Use a backup method you already set up
- SMS to an eligible standard mobile or landline number, if that number is still yours.
- Authenticator app, which generates codes on the device where you installed it. If its codes are rejected, check that the device’s date and time are set to update automatically, because time-based codes depend on an accurate clock.
- Mobile-app prompt, which requires the Upwork app signed in on a device you still control.
- Security question, if you set one up and can answer it exactly as entered.
Set up backup methods while you still have access
Once you are signed in, open your two-step verification settings and add at least two methods, so that one lost phone or one unavailable number does not block you again. Upwork’s help article on managing two-step verification lists the current options and their setup steps.
No backup method and login is blocked
If you have no working backup method and cannot sign in, Upwork directs users to the security-information reset form. The team then verifies your identity before restoring access, so answer with the details that match the account rather than guessing. This process takes longer than a code request, and Upwork does not publish a turnaround time for it.

When to contact Upwork support
Escalate to Upwork support when the documented steps have not worked:
- The code still does not arrive after the checks in Step 1, and your number is a standard mobile or landline number.
- The number is tied to an account whose associated email you can no longer access.
- You have no working backup method and cannot sign in.
- An error repeats after you have followed the on-screen instructions on the current screen.
Use the Contact Support link in the Help Center, or the security-information reset form where it applies. Upwork’s public guidance does not diagnose individual error messages or promise a fix for every carrier, country, or account state, so support is the route for a case that the general steps cannot resolve. Menu labels and screens change over time, so if the wording on your screen differs from this guide, follow the instructions shown on it.
