Hyundai Clarifies 2025 Security Incident: Who Was Affected and What to Do

Hyundai says about 2,000 people—not 2.7 million drivers—may have had employment-related data affected by a 2025 cyber incident involving its IT affiliate, Hyundai AutoEver America (HAEA). The 2.7 million figure referred to connected vehicles in North America, according to Hyundai’s clarification reported by HotHardware. The company said it mailed notices on or about October 30, 2025; anyone who received one should use that letter to confirm which data elements were involved and whether its protection offer can still be activated.

Who may have been affected?

Hyundai’s clarification, reported by HotHardware on November 13, 2025, said approximately 2,000 individuals—primarily current and former HAEA and Hyundai Motor America employment-related individuals—may have had employment-related data affected. This is an approximate company-reported figure, not a regulator-confirmed national total. It does not mean that every Hyundai vehicle owner or connected-vehicle user was affected. HotHardware’s report contains the clarification.

State records document notices and incident details for specific jurisdictions, not a complete nationwide count. Maine’s filing, for example, lists one affected Maine resident; that is not the total number of people affected across the United States. Maine Attorney General breach entry.

What does the 2.7 million figure mean?

It refers to connected vehicles in North America, not people whose personal information was exposed. Hyundai made that distinction in its clarification reported by HotHardware. Headlines or posts describing 2.7 million affected drivers conflate the vehicle figure with the approximate number of people Hyundai said may have had employment-related data affected.

Earlier coverage referred to Social Security numbers and driver’s licenses; Hyundai’s later clarification described employment-related data affecting approximately 2,000 people. The reviewed public notice does not establish that every recipient had the same information exposed. If you received a letter, check its data-elements section for the details that apply to you. When did the incident and notices occur?

  • February 22 and March 2, 2025: Maine’s filing lists these as breach dates.
  • March 1, 2025: HAEA says it became aware of the incident; Maine’s filing gives the same discovery date.
  • October 30, 2025: Maine’s record lists consumer notification, and Hyundai’s clarification says direct notices were mailed on or about this date.
  • November 3, 2025: California’s Attorney General listing records HAEA with event dates February 22 and March 2 and a listing date of November 3. A state listing date is not necessarily the same as an individual letter’s mailing date.
  • November 13, 2025: HotHardware published Hyundai’s clarification of the 2.7 million vehicle figure and approximate 2,000-person figure.

What did HAEA do after discovering the incident?

In its notice, HAEA said it investigated after learning of the incident, took steps to terminate unauthorized access to the affected part of its IT environment, engaged external cybersecurity specialists, analyzed available data and forensic information, and continued security enhancements. These are the company’s statements in its notice, not an independent assessment of its security controls. HAEA sample notice.

What support did the notice offer?

HAEA’s sample notice offers notified individuals an optional, complimentary two-year Epiq Privacy Solutions service that includes three-bureau credit monitoring and identity-protection services. To use it, recipients must activate it within 90 days of the date on their own letter, using the activation code provided there. What should someone who received a notice do?

  1. Read the letter closely. Confirm the specific data elements listed for you, the letter date, the activation deadline, the unique code and the contact details. The sample notice is not a substitute for your individual letter.
  2. Decide whether to activate the included service. If your letter’s enrollment period is still open, consider whether the offered monitoring and identity-protection services meet your needs. The notice describes an optional offer; it does not establish that you must buy any additional service.
  3. Watch accounts and credit reports for unfamiliar activity. Review relevant financial accounts and credit files, and follow up directly with a financial institution or credit bureau if you find something you do not recognize.
  4. Consider a fraud alert or credit freeze based on your circumstances. The FTC’s business guidance advises breach-notifying organizations to consider offering support such as credit monitoring or identity-theft protection when sensitive data is exposed. For consumers, the FTC’s breach-response guidance discusses considering a fraud alert if you do not place a credit freeze. Neither a freeze nor a paid identity-protection product is stated to be required here. FTC, “Data Breach Response: A Guide for Business” (August 2023).
