Sony Interactive Entertainment reported that more than 95 million PS5 consoles had been sold in worldwide retail channels by June 30, 2026. That is a sell-in figure—not a verified count of consoles purchased by consumers, still in use, or owned by distinct people. Sony also reported 1.6 million PS5 hardware units for April–June 2026.
What does “PS5 units sold” mean in Sony’s figures?
Sony reports PS5 hardware on a sell-in basis: units sold into retail channels. Its June 30, 2026 milestone is therefore not the same as consumer purchases at checkout. Sony’s reporting does not provide a matching consumer sell-through total for that date, so the number of consoles actually bought by players cannot be calculated from this figure.
The milestone is also not a count of active consoles or individual owners. A console may be in a retailer’s inventory, and a person may use more than one console or account. Sony does not establish those counts with the sell-in total.
How many PS5 units did Sony report in the latest quarter?
Sony Group Corporation reported 1.6 million PS5 hardware units for FY2026 Q1, the quarter from April 1 through June 30, 2026. The comparable FY2025 Q1 figure was 2.5 million. Comparing Sony’s published, rounded sell-in figures, the latest quarter was down 0.9 million units, or about 36%, year over year.

This quarterly figure and the cumulative milestone answer different questions: 1.6 million is the reported hardware volume for one quarter, while more than 95 million is the worldwide cumulative sell-in total through June 30. Sony had reported 93.7 million cumulative sell-in units as of March 31, 2026; that earlier figure precedes the June milestone and is not contradictory.
What do the sales figures tell gamers?
They show scale, not an individual console’s popularity
A worldwide sell-in total indicates the scale of Sony’s distribution to retail. It does not show how many consoles were sold in a particular country, how many remain available in stores, or what share of gamers own a PS5. Sony’s cited figures do not give a regional breakdown of the more-than-95-million milestone.

A quarterly decline does not explain its cause
The year-over-year comparison shows fewer reported PS5 hardware units in FY2026 Q1 than in the same quarter a year earlier. By itself, it does not establish whether the difference reflects price, supply, competition, game releases, or another factor. Those explanations would require separate evidence.
Engagement statistics measure something else
Sony Interactive Entertainment reported 125 million PlayStation monthly active users as of June 30, 2026. Sony defines MAU as an estimate of unique accounts that played games or accessed PlayStation services online during the quarter’s last month. It is an account-activity measure, not a PS5-owner or console count.

How do software and activity figures fit in?
Sony reported 66.1 million full-game software units in FY2026 Q1, with a digital download ratio of 82%. Both figures cover PS4 and PS5 full-game software combined; neither is a PS5-only game-sales total or a hardware-purchase measure.
Sony Interactive Entertainment also reported more than 1.706 billion cumulative PS4 and PS5 software units as of June 30, 2026. Separately, Sony reported more than 51 billion annual gameplay hours as of March 31, 2025; that figure describes activity across PlayStation and should not be read as PS5-only playtime.

Together, these measures help describe the broader PlayStation platform, but they track different things: hardware units sold into retail, software units, active accounts, and gameplay activity. None can be substituted for another to estimate PS5 ownership.

- Match the time period: compare a quarter with the same quarter in another year, or a fiscal-year total with another fiscal-year total.
- Match the measure: distinguish quarterly units from cumulative totals.
- Keep the basis clear: Sony’s disclosed hardware figures are sell-in, not consumer sell-through.
- Keep the geography consistent: a worldwide total cannot be compared directly with a regional number.
- Separate hardware from audience and software: active accounts and combined PS4/PS5 software figures are not console units.
Sony corrected previously disclosed FY2025 Q2 and Q3 hardware figures in its FY2026 Q1 supplemental report. Anyone reproducing those periods should use the revised figures: 4.0 million and 7.9 million, respectively.
