The fare can be paid in miles rather than cash, but whether the trip is truly free depends on the specific itinerary you find and the cash total shown at checkout. This guide walks through the search, what to compare, and where the limits are.
What “free” covers and what it does not
In a miles booking, the seat is paid for with miles. Taxes and fees on award travel are a separate cost, and United’s MileagePlus terms make them the member’s responsibility. A trip only ends up with no out-of-pocket cost if the checkout total shows nothing payable in cash.
- Miles price: set per itinerary, based on route, date, and cabin. This guide does not give a mileage price because none applies across routes or dates; you see it only in search results.
- Cash component: taxes and fees can still apply to an award booking. Do not assume a zero-cash trip until the final total confirms it.
- Availability: an itinerary appearing in results is what the search shows at that moment. Award space can change, so treat each result as a snapshot until you complete the booking.
How to search for an award flight
- Open United’s official award-travel booking page.
- Select Miles as the pricing option. This is what makes the results show mileage prices rather than cash fares.
- Choose a trip type: one-way, round-trip, or multi-city.
- Enter the origin, destination, travel dates, number of travelers, and cabin.
- If your dates are flexible, use the flexible-date option to check more than one set of dates on the same route.
- If needed, apply filters: nonstop flights only, United and United Express flights, or Star Alliance options that include partner airlines.
- Run the search and compare the itineraries returned.
- Before you pay, read the cash taxes and fees on the checkout page, not just the miles figure on the results screen.
Compare the whole itinerary, not just the miles
The lowest mileage price is not automatically the best outcome. Compare each option across these dimensions:
- Miles required for the chosen cabin.
- Cash taxes and fees at checkout.
- Dates and times, including whether a nearby date is much cheaper in miles.
- Cabin, since the same route can carry very different mileage prices by cabin.
- Operating airline, which may differ from the airline on your ticket when a partner operates the flight.
- Connections, including the number of stops and the layover length.
How to weigh these depends on your priorities. If you want to spend the fewest miles, flexible dates and connecting routings usually give you the most options. If a specific cabin or nonstop travel matters more, you may accept a higher mileage price to get it. If you want a particular carrier, filter by airline before comparing.

Pooling miles: what the 2024 announcement covers
On March 21, 2024, United announced that MileagePlus members could pool miles with family and friends, and that pooled miles could be redeemed for United and United Express award flights. Luc Bondar, Chief Operating Officer of MileagePlus, described the change this way:
“We’re always looking for new ways to provide the most value to all of our loyalty members and are proud to be the first major U.S. airline to allow our members to pool their miles with their loved ones and friends.”

The announcement covers United and United Express flights. It does not establish that pooled miles pay for every Star Alliance or other partner-operated flight. If a search result shows a partner airline operating your flight, confirm at booking that the miles and the seat are accepted before you rely on pooled miles for it.
Earning miles to fund a trip
United’s announcement names co-branded credit cards as one way members earn miles. Card offers, eligibility, and annual fees change, so check the current terms directly with the card issuer and United before applying. Treat card rewards as one way to build a balance, not as part of the booking steps above.

What this guide cannot confirm
- Live seat availability and prices: these appear only in the live search and change over time.
- Change, cancellation, and redeposit rules for award flights: MileagePlus Travel terms cover hotels, cars, and other travel products, so they cannot be used to determine the rules for flights booked with miles. Check United’s current award ticket rules before you book, and do not assume a refund or redeposit outcome.
- Current fees: any fee for changing or cancelling an award booking should be confirmed in United’s rules at the time you book.
The sources behind this guide date from 2024 and earlier for the pooling and terms details, so verify anything time-sensitive on United’s site before acting on it.
