United Airlines has resumed passenger service at McClellan-Palomar Airport (CLD) in Carlsbad after being away for roughly 11 years. The routes that have started are Denver and San Francisco. The County of San Diego’s airport page, checked October 8, 2026, lists both routes as commenced. For North County travelers, this adds a second departure option, but whether it lowers your costs depends on the full trip, not the fare alone.

Service was announced in advance, and the operating start has since been confirmed. The table separates the original plan from the status reported later.

Where the routes go
Both routes connect to United hubs, which matters more for budgeting than the nonstop list alone. The County describes Denver and San Francisco as hubs that can offer North County passengers one-stop connections to other domestic and international destinations. That is connection potential, not a guaranteed itinerary: a connection may be cheaper or more expensive than a nonstop from San Diego International Airport (SAN), and it adds time.
Denver (DEN)
Denver is the route to price first if you travel east or to the mountain West, because it can carry connections beyond the nonstop city. Compare the total itinerary, including layover length and any extra night, against a SAN ticket with a similar final destination.

San Francisco (SFO)
San Francisco is the route to price if your trip is west-coast or international. Like Denver, it is a connection point rather than a final destination for most travelers, so the cheapest ticket on paper may not be the cheapest trip once connections are counted.
Why the 2015 exit still matters
A North County Pipeline report says United stopped serving the airport in 2015 and had been away for nearly 11 years. AeroRoutes says United last operated Los Angeles to Carlsbad service until April 2015. Those are two different earlier routes, so this is a return on new routes, not a restoration of an old one. Do not assume old fare levels, schedules, or loyalty benefits apply to the new Denver and San Francisco flights.

How to compare Carlsbad with San Diego International
A lower base fare at Carlsbad does not guarantee a lower trip cost. Use the steps below on identical dates, passenger counts, and cabin classes.
- Price the same trip at both airports. Search CLD and SAN for the same travel dates. For a Carlsbad search, the destination must match a route that is currently operating, which the County page lists as Denver and San Francisco.
- Add the cost of getting to each airport. For CLD, include mileage and parking for the trip length, or rideshare, taxi, or shuttle costs. The County page lists rental-car companies and taxi-shuttle services, but it does not name providers or give prices, so get quotes for your address.
- Add the cost of getting to SAN from the same starting point. Your home is the fixed point, so use the same method for both airports.
- Count your time at both ends. Include drive time, the earlier arrival you need for check-in, and the time spent on any connection.
- Check baggage costs for the actual fare. Bag fees and carry-on rules are not covered in the sources used here. A fare that looks lower can cost more once checked bags are added, so confirm United’s current policy before you book.
- Recheck the schedule before you book. The planned frequency may change, and the County page does not supply a timetable.
About the airport and its noise rules
McClellan-Palomar Airport is owned and operated by the County of San Diego, which describes it as serving airlines and private aircraft operators. County lease materials from 2025 refer to a Voluntary Noise Abatement Program that encourages jet activity between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. This is guidance, not a binding list of operating hours, so schedules should be confirmed with the airline.
