Airlines canceled about 800 flights across the two storm-affected days, according to the airport operator. The closure was weather-related—not a United Airlines system failure—and available sources do not verify claims that BER’s website communications were cut off.
What happened at Berlin Brandenburg Airport?
Freezing rain and black ice disrupted operations at BER on February 5, 2026. The airport operator says flights were suspended from the evening of February 5 into early afternoon the next day. The airport then restarted operations gradually around midday on February 6, but delays and cancellations continued after flights resumed. The operator’s February traffic report gives the shutdown and cancellation total; Deutsche Welle’s February 6 report describes the restart and continuing disruption.
In a statement reproduced by DW, the airport said: “Due to weather conditions, no takeoffs or landings are currently possible.” This was an airport-wide weather disruption, not an event attributed to United Airlines.
Did United cancel hundreds of flights in Berlin?
No. The airport operator’s figure is about 800 cancellations across airlines at BER over the two days of freezing rain. It is not a United-only count. BER’s current airline information lists United service to Newark and one destination in its schedule information; that does not make the airport a United hub. BER’s airline list provides the current service information.

Was BER’s website communication cut off?
That claim is unverified. An AOL article discussing the storm repeats social-media allegations that communication through BER’s official website was effectively cut off, but the airport operator’s reports confirm the weather shutdown and resumption—not a website outage. The available evidence does not establish that the airport or United stopped communicating through its website during the storm. AOL’s February 9 article is the source for the online allegation, not independent confirmation of it.
How the Berlin storm differs from United’s 2025 outage
United did have a separate technology problem on August 6, 2025. The Associated Press reported that the affected system was Unimatic, which houses flight information, and that 218 United flights were canceled that day, citing FlightAware. That was an airline technology outage, not the cause of BER’s February 2026 weather closure.

The Associated Press report covers the United outage. Its cancellation figure should not be added to, or confused with, BER’s airport-wide storm total.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the storm meant for BER’s February traffic
BER recorded 1.63 million passengers in February 2026, 4.8 percent fewer than in February 2025. The airport operator said weather-related cancellations affected the month’s traffic. This is a monthly passenger comparison, not a count of passengers affected by the two-day shutdown. The February traffic report is the source for both figures.
