Not necessarily. United CEO Scott Kirby warned that prolonged high fuel prices could make it difficult for the airline to pass along much of its added cost. United later reported recovering about half of its second-quarter fuel-cost increase and forecast further recovery—but neither statement proves that every traveler will face higher fares or that customers will replace all lost profits.
What United’s CEO said about fuel costs
In a March 20, 2026, message to employees, Kirby said jet-fuel prices had more than doubled over the preceding three weeks. He estimated that if prices stayed at that level, United would incur an additional $11 billion in annual fuel expense—more than the airline made in its best year, which he described as less than $5 billion in profit. These were conditional estimates from Kirby, not a forecast that fares would rise by a set amount.
Kirby also cautioned: “But it may be a challenge to continue passing through much of the increased fuel price if oil stays higher for longer.” The message discussed pruning schedules tactically and restoring the full schedule in the fall. It did not say that travelers would necessarily cover all of United’s added costs or lost profits. Read United’s March 20 employee message.
What United later reported—and what remains a forecast
United’s July 15, 2026, earnings release put the added fuel expense in a later context. Based on oil prices as of July 14, the company expected nearly $6 billion in additional full-year fuel expense compared with its expectation at the beginning of the year. It reported that second-quarter fuel expense was up $2.3 billion, or 84%, year over year, and said it had recovered approximately half of that increase.

United forecast that it would recover approximately 80% to 90% of the increase in the third quarter and 100% in the fourth quarter. Those later-quarter percentages were company forecasts in the July release, not confirmed results. “Recovered” also does not mean that the entire amount came from higher ticket prices: the figures describe United’s recovery of the fuel-cost increase, not a route-by-route breakdown of fares or revenue sources. The company’s outlook changed as assumptions changed. In an April investor update, United had estimated recovery of 40% to 50% in Q2, 70% to 80% in Q3, and 85% to 100% in Q4, based on the Gulf Coast jet forward curve as of April 17. What travelers may see on their bills
Checked-bag fees
The Associated Press reported in 2026 that United raised the first checked-bag fee by $10 to $45 and the second-bag fee to $55 on covered routes. The report said customers who checked bags less than 24 hours before departure faced an additional $5. Some travelers could still qualify for a free first bag, including certain co-branded credit-card holders, loyalty-tier members, active military personnel, and premium-cabin passengers. Optional services and ticket fares are different charges
The AP also reported that United was changing premium-cabin pricing so that some features, including advance seat selection and fully refundable tickets, could be offered as optional extras. These charges are not the same thing as a higher base fare. To assess what a flight will actually cost, compare the same route, travel date, cabin, fare type, and traveler eligibility—and add any bags, seat choices, or flexibility you need. How the Iran war fuel shock relates to ticket prices
Fuel is a significant airline expense, so a sustained increase can pressure costs and influence pricing decisions. But fuel prices do not translate mechanically into the same fare increase for every passenger: airlines sell different fare classes on different routes, and the price a traveler pays also reflects factors such as demand and competition. The evidence here documents fuel-cost pressure, United’s reported cost recovery, and specific fee changes; it does not establish a universal fare increase caused by the war or show that higher prices will restore all profits.
The Associated Press reported an International Air Transport Association estimate of average global jet fuel at $209 per barrel for a particular week in May 2026, compared with roughly $99 per barrel at the end of February. Those are time-specific global figures, not a current price or a United-specific fuel cost. The AP report provides the timing and attribution.

In an August 25, 2026, CNN interview, Kirby said costs had risen and driven fares higher. He also said airfares remained 13% below their pre-COVID level. That comparison is his claim; the reviewed transcript does not give an index or methodology to independently verify it. - Compare the same itinerary. Check the same route, dates, cabin, and fare type; a different flight or fare class is not a clean price comparison.
- Check the full fare. Add the baggage, seat-selection, and refund options you would actually use, and account for any card, status, military, or cabin-based exemptions.
- Use current trip-specific terms. Airline fees and rules can change, so confirm United’s current conditions before buying or checking in.
That comparison can show what your trip costs now, but it cannot by itself establish that a change was caused by the Iran war. The available evidence does not provide a full route-level, like-for-like fare comparison across airlines.
