What happened to the five O’Hare gates?
On June 2, 2025, CBS Chicago reported that Chicago had awarded United five additional gates at O’Hare. Its available report text said other airlines had been using them, but did not identify those carriers or provide gate numbers. CBS Chicago’s June 2 report
United later said it secured the five gates earlier in October through the City’s annual reallocation process. The June report and October announcement describe related parts of the story: the reported award and United’s later confirmation of the timing and the airline’s intended use.
United says O’Hare gates are reallocated under the 2018 use and lease agreement based on the number of flights each carrier flew in the prior year. That is the airline’s account of the process; the available sources do not include an independent municipal allocation record establishing the full formula.

What United said the gates would enable
In its October 22, 2025 announcement, United said the added gate space enabled plans to add 10 domestic destinations from O’Hare in 2026. Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances, said the gates were behind the new routes and described them as offering Chicago travelers more options. That is the airline’s explanation of its plan, not an independent measure of the gates’ economic impact.
Announced new domestic destinations
United identified six of the destinations as exclusive from O’Hare: Santa Barbara, Eugene, Paducah, Lynchburg, Monterey and St. George. It gave spring or summer 2026 start timing and daily or Saturday seasonal frequencies for the announced routes. The release also named Rochester, Wausau, Marquette and seasonal Idaho Falls among the new destinations.

United also said the added gate space enabled it to resume Chicago–Tel Aviv service in November 2025 and extend Dublin service from seasonal to year-round. These were network effects stated in the October 2025 release; they should not be read as confirmation that either route’s schedule remains unchanged today.
Why five more gates do not guarantee every flight
A gate allocation gives an airline access to terminal space. An announced schedule is the airline’s plan to operate flights. Airport operating capacity determines how much traffic the airport can handle under its physical and regulatory constraints. These are connected, but they are not interchangeable measures.

United’s 750-flights-a-day figure was a projection for summer 2026, not a record of flights that necessarily operated. In April 2026, the Associated Press reported that federal officials required about 300 daily flights to be cut on peak summer days, setting a maximum schedule of 2,708. The difference illustrates why additional gates and an airline’s growth plans do not, by themselves, settle how many flights can run.

The available text of CBS Chicago’s June 2, 2025 report says other airlines had been using the gates, but does not name them. It also does not establish specific gate numbers or provide the full City decision record. Naming a previous user or assigning gate numbers would go beyond what that report supports.
