“Booking type” can describe how you reserve travel, where you make the reservation, which system handles it, or why you are travelling. These categories overlap: a hotel stay might be booked online directly with a chain for business, while a flight might be booked through an agent by phone. Knowing which dimensions apply helps you compare the full cost, understand who manages your reservation, and know whom to contact if plans change.
What does “booking type” mean?
There is no single, mutually exclusive list of booking types. For travel, the term usually refers to several separate dimensions: the channel used to reserve, the method used to make the reservation, the system or referral arrangement behind it, and the purpose of the trip. A single reservation can fit one category in each dimension.
Booking channel: direct or through an intermediary
Direct booking
A direct booking is made through a channel operated by the airline, hotel, or other travel provider, such as its website, app, call centre, or front desk.
Intermediary booking
An intermediary booking is made through an outside travel agent, online travel agency (OTA), or another booking service. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) puts the distinction plainly for air travel: “When you purchase a ticket through a travel agency or agent, you are not buying a ticket directly from the airline.” See DOT’s Buying a Ticket guidance.

The channel can affect who manages the reservation and how information reaches you. DOT advises air passengers who bought through an agent to contact the agent about ticket issues. Some airlines also describe communication limits for certain third-party bookings: Ryanair says some agents may not pass customer contact or payment details to the airline, while Norwegian says important updates may go first to the reservation owner or agency. Those are statements about the named carriers and do not establish how every airline or agent handles bookings. Check the booking confirmation for the party responsible for changes, cancellations, and refunds.
Metasearch and booking sites are not the same
A metasearch service compares offers from multiple booking sites, hotel chains, or independent properties, then directs you to another site to complete the purchase. A booking site or OTA provides a marketplace where you can research and book travel services. Seeing an offer in search results does not necessarily mean you have reserved it there. Trivago, for example, describes itself as a hotel metasearch platform that directs users to booking sites; the reservation is completed with the linked provider. See trivago’s about page.

Reservation method: online or offline
Method describes how the reservation is made, not whether it is direct or intermediated. An online reservation may be made on a provider’s own site or through a third party. A phone reservation may be made with the provider or an agent.
- Online: through a website or app, either direct or via an intermediary.
- Offline or manual: through a phone call, in person, mail, fax, or email. A hotel-services teaching note describes manual reservations as often being recorded and confirmed manually.

Hotel system, referral, and purpose categories
The same teaching note describes additional hotel reservation categories. They concern how a booking is organized or why the guest is travelling, rather than providing alternatives to direct and intermediary channels.
- Central reservation service: a system that handles reservations across a group of properties.
- Same-chain referral: one property refers a guest to another property within the same group.
- Business-customer reservation: a reservation associated with business travel.
- Leisure-customer reservation: a reservation associated with personal or holiday travel.
For example, a leisure traveller could book online directly with a hotel that uses a central reservation service. The channel, method, system, and purpose all describe different features of that one booking.

How to compare booking options before paying
Do not choose based only on the headline price. Compare the terms attached to the specific room or fare, and identify who controls the reservation.
- Total price: include required taxes, fees, and any charges relevant to your plans.
- Restrictions: check cancellation, change, and refund terms, plus any fare or room conditions.
- Included services: confirm baggage, seats, meals, or other features rather than assuming they are included.
- Reservation responsibility: establish whether the provider or an intermediary holds the booking and who must handle a change or complaint.
- Updates and records: confirm which contact details are on the reservation, how updates will reach you, and save the confirmation.
For airfare offered in the United States, DOT says displayed fares must include applicable government taxes and fees and mandatory carrier surcharges. It also says optional services such as seat selection, baggage, Wi-Fi, and travel insurance cannot be preselected to force an opt-out; ticket types may carry different restrictions. These are U.S.-specific airfare rules, not a universal standard. See DOT’s airfare guidance.

U.S. airline 24-hour hold or cancellation rule: limited scope
DOT describes a requirement for qualifying tickets purchased at least seven days before departure: an airline must offer either a 24-hour cancellation with a full refund or a 24-hour hold at the quoted price. It does not have to offer both. DOT says this requirement does not apply to tickets booked through online travel agencies, travel agents, or other third-party agents. This is a U.S. rule with a defined scope; check the current DOT guidance and the terms for your particular booking rather than assuming the same protection applies elsewhere or to every purchase.
Who should you contact if a booking changes?
Start with the party identified on your confirmation as managing the reservation. For air tickets bought through an agent, DOT advises contacting that agent first about ticket problems. Carrier practices can differ, and an intermediary’s role may affect whether the airline has your contact details or sends updates directly. Keep the confirmation and verify contact information before travel. For international trips, DOT also says travellers are responsible for having the valid travel documents their trip requires; check official entry requirements for your destination and circumstances.
