It compresses selected market and attention data into a score—often shown from 0 to 100—that can help describe the mood around Bitcoin. Its meaning depends on who publishes it, how that provider calculates it, and when the reading was updated. An extreme score alone does not show that Bitcoin is cheap or expensive, and it does not tell you when to buy or sell.
What does the Crypto Fear and Greed Index mean?
The index turns selected market and attention signals into a score intended to represent sentiment. Alternative.me publishes one widely referenced version focused on Bitcoin sentiment, along with current and historical readings. The score is a proxy—not a direct count of what every crypto investor feels, a measure of every coin’s mood, or an asset that can be bought or sold.
In the bands described by Binance Academy’s April 20, 2026 explainer, a score of 0–24 indicates extreme fear, 25–49 fear, 50–74 greed, and 75–100 extreme greed; its explanatory text describes a score near 50 as neutral. These are that explainer’s labels, not universal definitions for every provider. Name the publisher and update time whenever you quote a score, since providers can calculate their own versions differently.
How is the Crypto Fear and Greed Index calculated?
Binance Academy’s account of the Alternative.me-style index describes a combination of Bitcoin market data and attention signals. Its April 20, 2026 explainer lists the following original component weights:
#1 Best Overall
| Component | Original weight | How it is interpreted |
|---|---|---|
| Volatility | 25% | Bitcoin price and volatility relative to 30- and 90-day averages are treated as a proxy for uncertainty or fear. |
| Market momentum and volume | 25% | Current momentum and volume relative to 30- and 90-day averages; sustained buying activity is treated as a greed-associated signal. |
| Social media | 15% | Activity and interaction around Bitcoin-related hashtags on X, formerly Twitter. |
| Bitcoin dominance | 10% | Bitcoin’s share of total crypto market capitalization; rising dominance may indicate a shift toward Bitcoin and away from riskier altcoins. |
| Google Trends | 10% | Bitcoin-related search interest. Binance gives searches such as “bitcoin scam” and “bitcoin price manipulation” as examples associated with fear. |
| Surveys | 15% originally; described as paused | The component is not currently active in the account cited. Binance says its weight is redistributed proportionally among active factors; CoinMarketCap says it is unclear how the other percentages are affected. |
Those figures are original weights, not a verified statement of the current active weighting scheme: the survey component is paused, and the cited explainers differ on how its share is handled. The listed active percentages therefore should not be added up and treated as confirmed current weights.
Even when the inputs are known, a composite score can hide which signals are moving it. A fearful reading could reflect volatility, search behavior, or other components in different proportions. The score alone does not show the underlying data or establish why market participants are acting as they are.

How should you use the index in a trading decision?
Use it as one piece of short- or mid-term sentiment context, alongside price and volume analysis and a separate assessment of risk. Binance Academy cautions that the index is not a standalone decision tool and is unlikely to identify long-term bull or bear regime changes reliably on its own. The following is a way to organize a decision, not a strategy shown to produce profits:
- Identify the reading. Record the provider, score, label, and update time so that you know exactly which version you are considering.
- Check what may be driving it. Review the provider’s methodology and, where available, the component data rather than assuming the label explains the market.
- Compare it with other evidence. Consider price and volume behavior and other analysis relevant to your thesis. A sentiment score does not replace them.
- Write down the decision separately. State your reason for acting or not acting, the conditions that would change your view, and the risk you are prepared to take. The index itself does not set those limits.
Very low readings may coincide with widespread fear or panic selling; very high readings may accompany FOMO or concern about crowded enthusiasm. Neither interpretation proves a reversal is due. Binance Academy explicitly warns that fear and greed readings are not reliable buy or sell signals on their own, and that historical patterns do not guarantee future results.

Why do different crypto Fear and Greed indexes show different numbers?
There is no single universal calculation. Alternative.me is one publisher; Binance Academy identifies CoinMarketCap and Coinglass as other providers with their own data sources and methodologies, and notes that their readings can differ on the same day. Differences in input coverage, calculation choices, or update timing can therefore produce different scores without one number necessarily being an error.
Before comparing readings, check:
- which provider produced each score;
- when each reading was updated;
- which inputs the provider includes; and
- how the provider describes its methodology, including any paused components.
CoinMarketCap Academy also describes the survey component as paused and questions how the remaining weights are treated. That uncertainty is another reason not to assume two similarly named indexes use the same active weights.

What does the evidence say about extreme readings?
A February 2026 working paper by Murad Farzulla, affiliated in the paper with Dissensus and King’s College London, examines sentiment regimes and cryptocurrency spreads. It reports that extreme fear and greed regimes were associated with higher spreads than neutral periods in its analysis; the result replicated for Ethereum and across six of seven market cycles. The paper’s stated sample spans February 2018–January 2026 and contains 2,896 index observations. In a within-volatility-quintile comparison, it reports p < 0.001 and Cohen’s d = 0.21.
The finding concerns an association with spreads, not proof that the index predicts whether prices will rise or fall, or that a trade based on it will be profitable. The paper says the result is sensitive to model specification: comprehensive regression controls absorbed regime effects, while nonparametric stratification preserved them. It interprets sentiment extremity as potentially capturing interactions with volatility regimes and identifies separating sentiment effects from volatility as an open challenge. This is a working paper, not a settled trading rule.
