On April 24, 2025, the airline announced an investment in JetZero and a conditional path to purchase 100 Z4 aircraft, plus an option for 100 more. The maximum described is therefore 200, contingent on development progress and the aircraft meeting United’s requirements.
What United’s agreement actually covers
United’s announcement describes two parts: a purchase pathway for 100 JetZero Z4 aircraft and an option for an additional 100. An option is not the same as a confirmed order, and the announcement does not promise that United will buy or receive all 200 planes. The potential total is a ceiling, not a guaranteed fleet commitment. United Airlines’ April 24, 2025 announcement says any purchase depends on development milestones and on the aircraft satisfying the airline’s safety, business, and operating requirements.
| Part of the announced pathway | Aircraft | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase pathway | Up to 100 | A conditional route to purchase, not an unconditional firm order. |
| Additional option | Up to 100 | A further possible purchase, not a commitment to exercise the option. |
| Maximum described | Up to 200 | The combined potential, subject to conditions; not a guaranteed delivery total. |
What the JetZero Z4 is—and what remains unproven
JetZero describes the Z4 as an “all wing” blended-wing-body aircraft. Unlike a conventional airliner’s distinct tube-shaped fuselage and wings, the blended-wing concept integrates the body and wing into a more continuous shape. United and JetZero say the design has the potential to improve fuel efficiency by up to 50%. That is a company-stated potential, not a measured result from a certified aircraft operating in airline service.
The development program has not yet reached the announced full-scale demonstrator milestone. United’s 2025 announcement said a demonstrator flight was expected in 2027. That date is a target, not confirmation that a flight has occurred, and the announcement does not establish certification or a guaranteed delivery schedule.

What must happen before United could buy the aircraft
- JetZero must advance the aircraft through development milestones, including the full-scale demonstrator flight targeted for 2027 in the announcement.
- The Z4 must meet United’s safety, business, and operating requirements.
- Any purchase beyond the conditional pathway would still depend on the applicable purchase decisions, including whether United exercises its option for another 100 aircraft.
These conditions make the announcement meaningful as a strategic investment and potential purchase pathway, but insufficient to treat 200 aircraft as a settled order or scheduled addition to United’s fleet.

If the design reaches service and delivers the efficiency its developers project, it could affect an airline’s fuel use and operating economics. But the announced “up to 50%” potential alone does not establish actual fuel savings, ticket-price changes, or financial returns. Those outcomes depend on aircraft performance, operating costs, certification, airline deployment, and other factors not specified in the announcement.

JetZero co-founder and CEO Tom O’Leary said the investment signals industry belief in the need for new technology to achieve efficiency and cost savings as air travel demand grows. That statement explains the companies’ rationale; it is not independent proof of the aircraft’s projected performance.
