Whether you can return a GameStop purchase, and how long you have, depends on three things: the product category, where and how you bought it, and its condition. Check those three details first, then match them to the rules below. As of October 8, 2026, GameStop’s full return policy sets 15 days for new unopened products and 7 days for pre-owned products and several electronics categories, while some categories are final sale. Because retailer terms change, confirm the current wording on GameStop’s full return policy page and your order-specific options before you ship a package or drive to a store.
Find your return deadline
GameStop does not apply one return window to everything. The full policy lists separate periods by product category, and the clock starts from the purchase date on your order. Use the category of the item itself, not the category of the order.

A holiday provision in the full policy covered purchases made November 16 through December 24 and extended the return deadline to January 10, 2026. That date has passed. Treat it as a historical term, and check the current policy for any holiday terms that apply to a purchase you make now.
Final-sale items and opened products
Some items cannot be returned at all. GameStop’s full policy places the following in its final-sale group:

Separately, the policy says certain items named in the policy may not be returned once opened. Opening a product is therefore a decision you should make only after you have checked whether that item is on the restricted list. The terms also reserve GameStop’s right to limit or decline any return and describe additional restrictions for some promotions, so an item that is not on a final-sale list is not automatically guaranteed a refund.
Condition, components, packaging, and proof
To be accepted, a returned product must be clean and resalable in a condition equivalent to how it was when sold. In practice that means:
- New items must be unopened.
- Apparel must be unworn, with tags still attached.
- Every applicable component must be included.
- Original packaging should be returned with the product.
GameStop accepts any of the following as proof of purchase: an order number, a confirmation email, the original sales receipt, a packing slip, or a return barcode. A return made with a gift receipt is refunded as a GameStop gift card or handled as an even exchange.
A valid government ID may be required, except where the law prohibits it. The policy lists a U.S. driver’s license, state ID, military ID, or passport as acceptable. Bring one to any store return, and expect to show it for a return that is shipped or processed by a store clerk.

Choose the right return route
Your purchase channel controls where the return can happen. Start with how you bought the item, then check the rules for that route.
In-store purchases
Return the item to a GameStop store. The full policy is direct on this point: “Items purchased in-store must be returned in-store.” When you visit, bring the in-store receipt or your GameStop.com order number.
Online orders returned in a store
An online order can be returned in a store only if its total is under $500. The full policy excludes online orders over $500 from store returns. For an online order under $500, GameStop’s returns help article says you can return it in a store with the packing slip. Do not assume every online order can be taken back at a store.
Shipped online returns and fees
If you cannot or do not want to return an online order in a store, you ship it back. GameStop’s fees are described differently in two official sources, so check the amount shown in your return flow before you print a label.

The full policy’s figures are specific to the item type, while the help article gives a range. Treat the amount displayed for your specific return as the one that applies, and do not assume a single universal fee.
Using the online returns portal
The help article describes a portal flow with the following steps:
- Enter your order number and the email address on the order.
- Choose a refund or a replacement.
- Choose a return method.
- Read the shipping fee shown for your return before you confirm.
The portal cannot process orders that contain digital items, Same Day Delivery orders, or Buy Online, Pick Up In Store (BOPS) orders. The help article directs those returns to a store. Because the full policy bars store returns for online orders over $500, check with customer service before you travel if your order is a Same Day Delivery or BOPS order above that amount.
Locations and product types with special rules
- Orders shipped to Puerto Rico, Hawaii, or Alaska are eligible for in-store return only.
- Refurbished tech is returnable only by calling customer service. It must be returned within seven days and unopened.
Refunds and GameStop’s discretion
With valid proof of purchase, GameStop refunds to the original form of payment or provides a replacement, as the policy indicates for your case. A redeemed Pro membership reward, coupon, or discount may change the refund amount. The policy reserves the right to limit or decline returns, so a return that meets the listed criteria is not guaranteed an identical outcome in every case. The published terms do not state a timetable for when a refund will post to your account.

Specific situations
Opened games
Before opening a game, check whether it falls under the list of items that cannot be returned once opened. If the product is in a 7-day special or collector edition category, your window is seven days. If it is a new, unopened item in a 15-day category, opening it may end your eligibility, depending on the rule that applies to that item.
Lost receipt
A lost receipt does not necessarily end a return. Any of the other accepted proofs of purchase, such as an order number, a confirmation email, or a return barcode, can work. A GameStop help article notes that a store may be able to locate an in-store purchase, although this is a possibility rather than a guarantee. Ask the store before you assume your return is blocked.
Defective products
GameStop’s return terms do not spell out the remedy for a defective product, and they do not state how long a refund takes to appear. Contact customer service with your order number before the return window closes, and keep the packaging and any proof of the defect in case you need them.
Picked-up preorders
Once you have picked up a preorder, it follows the standard return policy. Eligibility depends on the product’s condition, the product type, and how much time has passed since purchase, so apply the windows above. Before you return anything
- Identify the product category and the exact purchase date.
- Confirm the item is not on the final-sale list, and check whether it is restricted once opened.
- Gather the components, original packaging, and the proof you plan to use.
- Choose a route: store for in-store purchases and eligible online orders, the portal or shipping for others.
- Read the fee shown in your return flow before printing a label or visiting a store.
