An Uber driver screening “failure” can mean several different things: a check missed a disqualifying record, a report contains inaccurate or incomplete information, the process is taking longer than expected, or a driver is disputing a result that affects eligibility. Those situations are not interchangeable. Uber describes a process that screens driving records and criminal history, while federal investigators have documented a bounded example of screening failures in a Colorado sample from 2017. Neither source establishes a current nationwide Uber error rate.
What counts as an Uber screening failure?
Uber uses the phrase “My background check failed” on its help page, but a failed or delayed check does not by itself explain what happened. The term can refer to distinct outcomes:

Keeping these cases separate matters: a missed record raises a question about screening coverage; incorrect information raises a report-correction issue; a delay is a timing problem; and a negative result may reflect Uber’s eligibility standards rather than an error.
How Uber says its U.S. screening process works
Uber describes screening as covering identity verification, driving safety, and criminal history. Its stated sequence is:

- Identity verification. Applicants provide identity details for verification.
- Motor vehicle record check. Uber says it checks driving history, license validity, and disqualifying traffic violations. Applicants who do not pass this stage do not proceed to the criminal-background check.
- Criminal-background check. Applicants who pass the MVR check receive a criminal check through a third-party provider. Uber says its check usually covers an applicant’s adult criminal history, subject to limits imposed by local law, and that its partners search a range of records and databases.
Uber reports that around 70% of applicants it rejects are rejected because of the MVR check. That is Uber’s figure; the sources reviewed do not independently validate the proportion. Uber’s description of the checks is also the company’s account of its process, not an independent audit of how completely records are found.
How long an Uber background check takes
Uber says a check usually takes up to seven business days, but it can take longer. The company names Checkr, HireRight, and Samba Safety as screening providers and says courthouse processes can affect timing. Even after a vendor completes its report, Uber may need additional time to review it.

Uber says it runs a new check at least once a year. Some cities require checks more frequently, so the timing and rules may depend on where a driver operates.
What official evidence shows about missed records
GAO’s July 2026 report describes an account from Colorado officials: their review of a random sample of rideshare drivers in 2017 found instances in which people with disqualifying criminal histories had passed background checks. Officials also told GAO that oversight led to changes in background-check processes in certain instances.

This is evidence of screening failures in a particular sample, not a current national error rate for Uber. The account does not establish that every rideshare company had the same problem, that the issue persists at the same rate today, or that a screening failure caused a particular later incident.
Uber’s 2025 annual report also lists alleged background-check violations and claims under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) among its legal and regulatory matters. A company filing that records allegations is not proof that the allegations were established or that a court found liability.

What to do if your report appears wrong or incomplete
Uber’s stated route for correcting a report is to dispute the findings with the screening vendor. If the vendor changes the information and sends an updated report to Uber, Uber says it will reevaluate eligibility. The help-page description does not promise a particular resolution time or outcome.
- Identify the screening vendor. Check the communication about the background check or Uber’s help information; Uber names Checkr, HireRight, and Samba Safety.
- Dispute the report with that vendor. If you believe the report is inaccurate or incomplete, raise the dispute with the vendor rather than treating a pending review as a final finding.
- Allow for the updated-report step. Uber says that when the vendor sends an updated report, it reevaluates eligibility. A dispute and an eligibility decision are separate stages.
Do assault statistics show that screening failed?
No. Reported assault counts are not counts of background-check errors, and they do not show that a screening failure caused an assault. GAO says available sources do not provide a full picture of rideshare and taxi assaults from 2021 through 2025. As of June 2026, selected rideshare companies had not reported assault data for 2023–2025 or nonfatal physical assaults.

GAO reported 424 rideshare- and taxi-related assaults in Los Angeles from 2021 through 2023 and 109 in Chicago from 2023 through 2025; in each city and period, the count was less than 1% of all reported assaults. Those figures describe reported incidents in two places, not screening failures or the risk of a particular ride.
Separately, a 2024 GAO report said more than 95% of 267 respondents were aware of and had used at least one selected pretrip app safety feature in the past year. GAO characterized those intercept surveys as nongeneralizable, so the result should not be read as a national population estimate or as evidence about background-check accuracy.
What to compare when evaluating screening systems
Requirements vary by state and city, so a fair comparison should use the same jurisdiction and examine the same features. A fingerprint-based check is not automatically error-free, and local requirements are not uniform.
