Arthur Zafiropoulo, then chairman and CEO of chip-equipment maker Ultratech Inc., became a co-owner and investor in Ferrari Maserati of Silicon Valley, a dealership in Redwood City, California. The 2005 report was about a local dealership investment—not ownership of Ferrari, the automaker.
Who was the Ultratech CEO?
EE Times identified Arthur Zafiropoulo as Ultratech’s chairman and CEO when it reported the dealership investment on April 29, 2005. The article said Ferrari Maserati of Silicon Valley was holding its grand opening that day.
EE Times attributed details about the investment to the San Jose Mercury News, which described an investment in the “eight-figure” range and a “huge number” of Ferraris. Those descriptions do not establish an exact dollar amount or car count. Read the EE Times report.
What did he own, and who operated the dealership?
In a 2016 response concerning an investor presentation, Ultratech said: “Arthur Zafiropoulo owns but does not run the dealership. He is in a partnership with a separate team that manages its operations.” The statement distinguishes an ownership interest from day-to-day management; it does not establish who owns the dealership today. Did the investment mean he owned Ferrari?
No. The reported investment was in Ferrari Maserati of Silicon Valley, a dealership—not Ferrari N.V., the manufacturer and brand. Ferrari’s 2015 annual report said the company did not own its dealers and made virtually all sales through its dealership network. That describes Ferrari’s dealer model in 2015; it does not establish the dealership’s current ownership. Ferrari N.V. Annual Report 2015.

The cited reports establish the historical claims: EE Times reported the investment in 2005, and Ultratech said in 2016 that Zafiropoulo owned but did not run the dealership. They do not identify the dealership’s present owner or operator, so those historical statements should not be treated as current ownership information.
