The October 2025 headline covers two different actions, not one confirmed company-wide layoff total: a voluntary career-transition offer for some employees at Massive Entertainment in Malmö, Sweden, and a separate RedLynx restructuring proposal in Helsinki that could affect up to 60 workers if implemented. Later Ubisoft actions also included proposed or consulted reductions; those figures should not be added together as completed layoffs.
What Ubisoft announced in October 2025
Engadget reported on October 23, 2025, that Massive Entertainment was offering some employees at its Malmö studio a “voluntary career transition program” with financial and career assistance. The account, citing French publication Le Figaro, said the offer primarily targeted employees between projects and awaiting new assignments, with December 13 as the deadline to volunteer. Massive said it wanted to “realign” its teams and “strengthen our roadmap.” Its stated focus was The Division series, the Snowdrop engine and Ubisoft Connect. Engadget’s October 23 report
That offer was voluntary: it was not a statement that all eligible employees would leave or that a fixed number of jobs had already been eliminated. The report did not state how many people accepted the package.
RedLynx’s separate proposal in Helsinki
RedLynx, based in Helsinki, announced a restructuring proposal separate from Massive’s program. Engadget reported the studio said that, if implemented, the proposal could result in a maximum of 60 workers being let go. RedLynx described the measure as part of Ubisoft’s global effort to simplify, reduce costs and prioritize more efficiently. The figure was a potential maximum, not a completed layoff count.

How the later figures differ
Ubisoft’s subsequent disclosures and reporting describe different locations, dates and stages of action. The figures below are not interchangeable: some are company-wide headcounts, while others are proposed affected roles or objectives under consultation.

What Ubisoft’s headcount numbers do—and do not—show
The 17,097 figure at the end of September 2025 and 16,590 figure at the end of March 2026 are snapshots of Ubisoft’s total global workforce on different dates. They reflect company-wide change; they do not identify how many people left through the Malmö voluntary program, how many RedLynx roles were ultimately removed, or how much of the decline came from any one action.

Ubisoft’s May 2026 results described the company as entering the third and final phase of its cost-reduction program, with recruitment discipline and targeted restructurings supporting its fixed-cost target. That program context does not convert proposed role reductions or voluntary plans into confirmed individual departures.

- Proposed reduction: RedLynx’s maximum of 60 and the later approximately 55-role Swedish proposal were potential impacts, not verified completed layoffs.
- Consultation objective: The France headquarters plan aimed at 200 positions through voluntary departures, with consultations underway.
- Reported process: El País described a Barcelona collective dismissal process affecting 51 workers; its reporting attributed Belgrade and Winnipeg proposals to unions.
These are different events with different statuses, scopes and sources. Adding their figures would create a misleading company-wide layoff total.
