David Michaud-Cromp, a level designer at Ubisoft Montreal, said on February 2, 2026, that Ubisoft had terminated his employment effective immediately. He had previously said he received a three-day unpaid suspension connected to public comments about the company’s return-to-office policy. Ubisoft said respectful feedback does not lead to dismissal, but the public reports do not establish the specific reason for his termination.
What happened
Michaud-Cromp announced his termination on LinkedIn, in a statement quoted by GameSpot: “Today, I was terminated by Ubisoft, effective immediately.” He added, “This was not my decision,” and said he would not discuss internal details or the circumstances.
GameSpot reported that Michaud-Cromp was a level designer at Ubisoft Montreal, had worked at the company for 13 years, and most recently worked on Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Insider Gaming described his tenure as more than 13 years.
What led up to the termination
January: criticism of the return-to-office policy
In January 2026, Michaud-Cromp publicly criticized Ubisoft’s move to a five-day office workweek. GameSpot reported that he characterized the policy as motivated by property values and oversight rather than collaboration. That was his view of the policy, not an independently established account of management’s motive.

Late January: suspension described by the employee
Michaud-Cromp said Ubisoft imposed a “three-day unpaid disciplinary suspension” related to his public comments about the return-to-office policy and an alleged breach of the duty of loyalty, according to GameSpot’s earlier report. The reported account does not independently establish the allegation or the evidence behind it.
February 2: termination reported
On February 2, Insider Gaming reported that Michaud-Cromp said Ubisoft had terminated him. GameSpot also reported his confirmation. Neither outlet’s reporting establishes the company’s specific reason for the final employment decision.

What Ubisoft said
In a statement to GameSpot, Ubisoft said: “Sharing feedback or opinions respectfully does not lead to a dismissal.” The company referred to its Code of Conduct, which employees review and sign each year, and said that when the code is breached, established procedures apply, including escalating measures based on the breach’s nature, severity and repetition.
This is Ubisoft’s general public position on feedback and conduct. The statement does not identify the conduct or specific reason the company relied on in Michaud-Cromp’s termination. Ubisoft’s public Code of Conduct calls for a professional attitude and civil tone, and describes an open-door culture for constructive feedback. General policy language does not establish what occurred in an individual personnel process.
