USDA’s 2025 Data Blackout: What Happened to the Crop Report—and What’s Next

NASS recorded the October 9, 2025 Crop Production report as not released, while scheduling a separate November report with WASDE. USDA’s October 2026 calendar lists a new Crop Production release.

The USDA’s October 2025 funding lapse disrupted agricultural data releases, but it did not leave every report in the same status. The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) later listed the October 9, 2025 Crop Production report as not released. A separate notice had scheduled a November 14 Crop Production report alongside WASDE. As of October 8, 2026, USDA’s calendar listed another Crop Production report for October 9, 2026 at noon—an upcoming release in a different year, not evidence of an ongoing blackout.

Was the USDA crop report canceled?

For October 2025, NASS’s November 19 notice lists the Crop Production report scheduled for October 9 as not released. That is more precise than saying the October report was simply delayed: the notice does not say that this specific October report was later issued under a new date.

NASS’s October 31 notice had announced a revised November schedule, moving Crop Production from November 10 to November 14. It also said the World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report would be released in conjunction with that rescheduled Crop Production report. The November 19 notice’s separate entry for the October 9 report makes clear that the scheduled November release and the October non-release should not be conflated.

Why were USDA data releases disrupted?

NASS attributed its October 2025 release-date adjustments to the lapse in appropriations, stating: “Adjusted release dates are due to the lapse in appropriations.” In its November 19 notice, the agency said data collection and release paused for most reports during the lapse in federal funding.

The effect differed by report. NASS’s notice records a mix of rescheduled releases, data incorporated into later releases, and reports that were not released. It is therefore misleading to treat “the USDA blackout” as one uniform outcome for every agricultural data series. The notices establish the reporting disruption and its dispositions; they do not quantify resulting commodity-price effects or measure how much uncertainty users experienced.

What happened to Crop Production and WASDE?

Item Schedule or status recorded by NASS
Crop Production, October 9, 2025 Listed as not released in NASS’s November 19, 2025 notice.
Crop Production, November 2025 Moved from November 10 to November 14 in NASS’s October 31, 2025 notice.
WASDE, November 2025 NASS said it would be released in conjunction with the rescheduled November 14 Crop Production report.
Crop Production, October 9, 2026 Listed on USDA’s October 8, 2026 release calendar as scheduled for noon; this is a separate year and report event.

The October 31 notice describes the plan for November; the November 19 notice subsequently records the October report’s disposition. Read together, they explain why “postponed” is not an adequate description of the October 9, 2025 report.

When is the next USDA Crop Production report?

As of October 8, 2026, USDA’s release calendar listed Crop Production for October 9, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. It also listed Crop Progress for October 13 at 4:00 p.m. ET. The 2026 calendar entry is not a continuation of the 2025 lapse-related schedule. Because release calendars can change, check the USDA release calendar for the current listing before relying on a date or time.

Where can I find official USDA crop data?

Start with USDA NASS for official report notices and releases. NASS describes itself as “the federal statistical agency responsible for producing official data about U.S. agriculture” and says it is committed to providing “timely, accurate and useful statistics in service to U.S. agriculture.” Its website links to several ways to access available data:
