The marksheet was listed in UPSC’s archive from 18 January 2024, and a later notice on 24 September 2024 recommended six more candidates from the reserve list.
What the final result covers
The final merit lists followed the Preliminary Examination on 19 February 2023, the Main Examination on 24 and 25 June 2023, and Personality Tests held in November and December 2023. The recommendations covered these posts:
- Geologist, Geophysicist and Chemist Group ‘A’ posts in the Geological Survey of India.
- Scientist ‘B’ (Hydrogeology), Scientist ‘B’ (Chemical) and Scientist ‘B’ (Geophysics) Group ‘A’ posts in the Central Ground Water Board.
The official final-result notice, published by the Union Public Service Commission on 12 January 2024, contains the post-wise lists in order of merit: UPSC official website.
Vacancies and recommendations are different totals
UPSC reported 269 vacancies across the listed posts but recommended 258 candidates in the original final result. The figures below reproduce the notice’s post-wise vacancies and recommendations; grouped recommendation totals reflect the categories UPSC presented together.
#1 Best Overall
| Post or grouped recommendation category | Reported vacancies | Original recommendations |
|---|---|---|
| Geologist, GSI | 194 | 190 |
| Scientist ‘B’ (Hydrogeology), CGWB | 26 | 26 |
| Geophysicist, GSI / Scientist ‘B’ (Geophysics), CGWB | 26 Geophysicist; 2 Scientist ‘B’ (Geophysics) | 22 combined |
| Chemist, GSI / Scientist ‘B’ (Chemical), CGWB | 20 Chemist; 1 Scientist ‘B’ (Chemical) | 20 combined |
| Total | 269 | 258 |
These are counts from UPSC’s original result notice, not a statement that every vacancy was filled. The notice also said 19 recommended candidates had provisional results pending verification of original documents. Their provisional status was to remain valid for three months from the result declaration; candidature would be cancelled if required documents were not submitted within that period.
Six more candidates were recommended from the reserve list
On 24 September 2024, UPSC issued a follow-up notice recommending six candidates from the consolidated reserve list maintained under Rules 16 (iv) and (v). Five were recommended for Geophysicist/Scientist ‘B’ (Geophysics)—two EWS and three OBC candidates—and one OBC candidate was recommended for Chemist/Scientist ‘B’ (Chemical). The Ministry of Mines was to contact those candidates directly. This later notice is separate from the original 258 recommendations.

How to find the result PDF and marksheet
- Go to upsc.gov.in and open UPSC’s official result archives. Search for the Combined Geo-Scientist (Main) Examination 2023 final-result notification and open its linked PDF to see the recommended candidates by post. Site navigation labels can change, so use the result archives if the original menu wording is no longer shown.
- For marks, use UPSC’s marksheet archive rather than the final-result PDF. The archive lists the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination 2023 marksheet as available from 18 January 2024, with access listed through 18 February 2029: UPSC marksheet archive.
The result announcement date and marksheet availability date are not the same: the final result was announced on 12 January, while the archive lists marks from 18 January 2024. The original result notice had said marks would be made available within 15 days of publication.
