The June 2025 report that US prosecutors were examining suspected Iranian LPG imports was an attributed media report, not a public finding by prosecutors. The story changed on May 18, 2026, when the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced that Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL) agreed to pay $275 million to settle potential civil liability for 32 apparent violations of US Iran sanctions.
What the 2025 report said—and what Adani said then
On June 3, 2025, Scroll reported that The Wall Street Journal had reported US prosecutors were examining whether Adani Group entities imported Iranian-origin liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) into India. That was a report about an examination, not a publicly confirmed conclusion by prosecutors.
As quoted by Scroll, Adani categorically denied deliberate sanctions evasion and said it was not aware of an investigation. Those statements describe the company’s response at the time; they do not establish the status of later inquiries or responses. Scroll’s June 3, 2025 account.
What OFAC announced in 2026
OFAC announced on May 18, 2026, that AEL agreed to settle potential civil liability for 32 apparent violations of US sanctions relating to Iran. The settlement is an administrative civil resolution, not a criminal conviction or a court’s determination of guilt. The named settling entity is Adani Enterprises Limited, rather than the broader Adani Group. OFAC’s announcement.

The LPG purchases and alleged warning signs
OFAC said AEL bought LPG shipments from November 2023 through June 2025 from a Dubai-based trader that purported to supply gas from Oman and Iraq. OFAC said red flags should have alerted AEL that the LPG originated in Iran. These are OFAC’s findings in describing the apparent violations and settlement, not a separate criminal verdict. Payments and settlement amount
OFAC said US financial institutions processed 32 US dollar-denominated payments for the shipments, totaling approximately $192,104,044. That figure is the total of the payments OFAC described; it is not the settlement amount, a valuation of all LPG trade, or a stated measure of loss. The settlement amount is $275 million. What the settlement requires
Under the agreement, AEL represents that it has terminated the conduct described and commits to maintain a sanctions compliance program for at least five years after the agreement’s execution. OFAC said the apparent violations were egregious and not voluntarily self-disclosed; it also cited AEL’s remedial measures after discovering the conduct and its cooperation with the investigation in explaining the settlement amount. OFAC’s civil settlement provides an official enforcement account of apparent sanctions violations involving LPG purchases. It does not, by itself, confirm the current status of any separate criminal investigation by US prosecutors.
