The 2012 Sunday Times Rich List coverage identified the Barclay brothers as the wealthiest names in publishing and advertising, with an estimated £2,250 million, while Clive Calder led a separate music-industry ranking at £1.3 billion. These were reported estimates from contemporary coverage—not audited valuations or figures for today—and the available lists cover distinct categories rather than one exhaustive ranking of UK media fortunes.

Who led publishing and advertising?

The Guardian reproduced the Sunday Times Rich List 2012 table for publishing and advertising on 25 April 2012. Its figures are estimates in millions of pounds; parentheses show the prior-year comparison supplied in that table.

Person or family 2012 estimate 2011 comparison
David and Frederick Barclay £2,250 million £2,200 million
Richard Desmond £1,000 million £950 million
Rothermere family £760 million £730 million
Thomson family £700 million £660 million
Paddy McNally £515 million not stated in the Guardian table
Pearson family £500 million not stated in the Guardian table
Viscount Cowdray £500 million not stated in the Guardian table
Felix Dennis £500 million not stated in the Guardian table
Cristina Stenbeck £369 million not stated in the Guardian table
Mark Getty and family £330 million not stated in the Guardian table
Mike Danson £310 million not stated in the Guardian table
Sir Martin Sorrell £174 million not stated in the Guardian table
Ray Tindle £125 million £145 million

The table is a selection of notable entries, not a complete reproduction of all 20 names. The Guardian’s contemporary context linked the Barclay brothers with the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph, Richard Desmond with Northern & Shell, the Rothermere family with DMGT and the Daily Mail, and Sir Martin Sorrell with the founding of WPP. Those are descriptions from 2012, not a guide to present-day ownership.

Who topped the music-industry ranking?

In a separate report published by ITV on 29 April 2012, Clive Calder led the top ten of Britain’s richest people in music with a reported £1.3 billion. The list was not the same category table as publishing and advertising.

Rank Name Reported estimate
1 Clive Calder £1.3 billion
2 Lord Lloyd-Webber £680 million
3 Cameron Mackintosh £675 million
4 Paul McCartney £495 million
5 Simon Fuller £375 million
6 Simon Cowell £200 million
7 Elton John £195 million
8 Mick Jagger £190 million
9 Sting £180 million
10 Keith Richards £175 million

Why does another 2012 report give Paul McCartney a different figure?

An ITV report published three days earlier, on 26 April 2012, presented a different music-industry top ten. It put Clive Calder at £1,350 million and Cameron Mackintosh at £725 million, and ranked Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell together in third place at £665 million. That combined estimate included Shevell’s reported £150 million stake in her family’s haulage business; the article also attributed an additional £20 million to McCartney’s performance and album sales.

How should the rankings be read?

  • They cover different slices of media. The Guardian table concerns publishing and advertising; ITV’s lists concern music. The reports do not establish one complete ranking across every media subsector.
  • Some entries represent families or couples. The publishing table includes family fortunes, and the 26 April music report combines McCartney and Shevell. Those totals are not directly comparable to an individual’s estimate.
  • They are historical estimates. These figures describe wealth as reported for 2012, not audited values and not current net worth.
  • Ranking and valuation depend on the report. The two ITV music stories were published on different dates and use different figures and presentation; keep each report’s date and basis attached to its numbers.
