The Gateway Pundit’s parent company, TGP Communications, LLC, announced on April 24, 2024, that it would seek Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The bankruptcy court dismissed the case in July 2024, finding that TGP had not established a good-faith reorganization purpose and was solvent at the time. The dismissal let litigation continue outside bankruptcy; Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss later settled their defamation suit against the company and others, according to an October 2024 Associated Press report.

Who filed for bankruptcy, and when?

The debtor was TGP Communications, LLC, the parent company of The Gateway Pundit—not founder Jim Hoft personally. On April 24, 2024, Hoft announced that the company would seek Chapter 11 protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida. He said the aim was to reorganize and consolidate litigation. Hoft’s announcement

Hoft described the legal pressure as “progressive liberal lawfare attacks” and called Chapter 11 “a common tool for reorganization and to consolidate litigation when attacks are coming from all sides.” Those were his explanations for the filing, not findings by the court. Hoft’s statement

Why did Gateway Pundit file for bankruptcy?

Hoft said the company sought Chapter 11 protection in response to litigation and to consolidate legal disputes. That is the company founder’s stated rationale. The court later assessed the filing’s purpose independently and reached a different conclusion about whether this debtor had shown a valid basis for reorganization.

What did the bankruptcy court decide?

In an opinion dated July 24, 2024, and docketed July 25, the court dismissed TGP Communications’ bankruptcy case. The court identified The Gateway Pundit website as the company’s principal business asset and James Hoft as its sole owner. Bankruptcy court opinion

The judge found that TGP had not established a good-faith reorganization purpose and described the filing as a litigation strategy. The opinion also found TGP solvent at the time. Judge Mindy A. Mora wrote, “Congress envisioned bankruptcy as a public policy tool, not a corporate weapon.” That is the court’s case-specific reasoning, not a general rule that bankruptcy may never be used when litigation is involved. What financial figures did the court cite?

The opinion discussed company figures from TGP’s schedules and historical revenue reports. They are records cited in the 2024 proceeding, not current financial statements.

Figure Amount and period Qualification
Scheduled assets $2,323,996.76 TGP Communications schedules, as reported in the 2024 bankruptcy court opinion
Scheduled liabilities $102,596.61 TGP Communications schedules, as reported in the 2024 bankruptcy court opinion
Gross revenue $2,860,691 in 2022 TGP Communications, as reported in the 2024 bankruptcy court opinion
Gross revenue $3,097,988.38 in 2023 TGP Communications, as reported in the 2024 bankruptcy court opinion

The judge’s solvency finding concerned the company’s position at the time of the bankruptcy decision. The opinion treated potential litigation obligations as a separate concern; the figures above should not be read as a complete or current account of TGP’s finances. Did the bankruptcy protect the site from the election workers’ lawsuit?

The bankruptcy case was dismissed, allowing the state-court litigation to proceed outside it. In October 2024, the Associated Press reported that Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss had settled their defamation lawsuit against The Gateway Pundit, Jim Hoft, and Joe Hoft. The AP report said the settlement terms were not disclosed. It does not establish an amount, admission, or specific settlement condition. Associated Press settlement report
